  • Actually a great phone, probably one of the best compact Android phones of 2014.

Arugments for this or the Nexus 5:

    Nexus 5:
    - Better screen. Waaaay better screen.
    - Android 5.1 Lolipop.
    - Very slightly cheaper.

    This phone:
    - Way better camera. Nexus 5's camera is kind of rubbish.
    - Expandable storage.
    - Slightly better battery life.

Both phones have very similar internals, almost exact same size.

The Z3C has nearly 3 times the battery life of the Nexus 5, its battery is outstanding. In contrast, I would say the N5's screen is only slightly better - 1080p vs 720p, but both IPS LCD so similar viewing angles, brightness, outdoor visibility etc. The Z3C is also considerably smaller than the N5, and of much better construction quality (but has glass front & back so is more breakable).

Unless some really wanted that 1080p and extra 0.4" of screen, I don't think there's any reason to buy a Nexus 5 over this handset.

I have a Z1, which was fast and stable until it got the Lollipop update. Now it is sluggish and has memory issues.
Keep this in mind when buying a Sony phone with 2GB of RAM.

    • Memory leakage is a general issue with Lollipop until 5.1.1 unfortunately.
I've heard phones with 3GB ram suffering from memory leakage as well.
Hope Sony and other manufacturers update the phones with the latest Lollipop soon. :(

      • The Lollipop 5.1 somewhat fixed my Nexus 5 but not in all situations. But it was just nightmare to me in the Lollipop 5.0.x days. The phone was so slow and the memory leakage issue was so severe during the time.

I personally still like the Kitkat 4.4.4 rather than any version of the Lollipop.

        • Yeah, I am actually looking into rollback options. I also absolutely hate how they changed icons on the lock screen. My phone case has a small window through which I used to be able to see my notifications. In lollipop, those icons at the top are gone, replaced by stupendously large icons across the whole screen. I cannot see when my alarm is set to go off next unless I choose to make all content of all notifications fully visible on the lock screen. How bad is that?!

    • Did you perform a factory reset? Apparently that's a significant help with the Z1. I'm still waiting on the 5.0 update for mine as I'm waiting for the carrier version to come out.

    • Thanks for this. I won't upgrade my Z1 to LP until 5.1 is (if) available. Once you have a phone with expandable storage there's no turning back.

  • I was looking into this phone last night and found it becomes slightly cheaper here with free shipping for metropolitan areas, but they don't have the green colour.
If you desperately need a green phone, here is probably the cheapest.

    • Haha yeah ur right i was looking at that too last night..but mainly at the z1c…the z3c is $469 down to $455 that is with the mother's day coupon code mama143 i think to get $14 off…i would never use shipping without insurance though for orders above $100 though

its only about $70 more from Telstra, I would rather buy from an Aus store for warranty.

    • how much is it to unlock it ;)

      • no idea. wouldnt outright buys be unlocked?

      • +2

        They're already unlocked

        • thanks.

    • i was trying to find it on their online store but couldn't find it…only on plan…didn't know they were selling it outright. its not bad actually with the aus warranty….but i checked it with their 24/7 chat…they said its $600. I guess ill check at a telstra shop…

    • @ PVA : I agree $70 more is worth it for local warranty. Do you have further details on how you got it for $529 from Telstra? Best price I've been quoted from them is $600. Cheers.

Beware of the glass cracking for no reason on these phones - my rear glass cracked while playing a game and heating up.

    • +1

I dont get all these comments about cracks.
we have had 3 xperia Z for 2 years, no problems at all. My son has a Z3 and he had it in his pocket at school, played sport at lunch and got tackled - the phone is bent like the iphone6 bendgate. Front and rear glass is a banana but is not cracked at all. My son is a heavy user of phones and really rough with them.

You guys got lucky, there seems to be a very high fault % for these phones. I'm waiting for the screen to go any day now

        • +2

there are a lot used at work as well, the only ones with broken screens are ones that were dropped.
I am not saying you haven't got a problem (what a pain that would be) but I haven seen it . I am thinking it isnt as huge as the internet is making out (like the iphone bending).

Return the phone to where you bought it and kick up a stink to get it repaired.

        • @PVA: but you have expect the phone to be dropped at some point of its lifetime! My Galaxy S3 is 3 years old and screen is still intact and YES, it has been dropped several times.

Besides the Waterproof thing is almost a scam. The only advantage is if you are caught by surprise by rain, really. You can't use it at the beach or salty water swimming pool, so basically 90% of the opportunities to use its waterproofing ability.

        • @renaldof:
When I mean dropped I mean in a hostile work environment (building type workers) or phones have been dropped a lot too - normal stuff like fallen out of pocket, slipped out of our hands etc, those normal drops have been fine for us.

My son has taken plenty of pics underwater in the pool (not now that its bent), at the beach its been great to wash off sand under a tap, the phone gets used sometimes in the shower, streaming music.

I guess we are lucky over the past few years, or you have been very unlucky.

    • I have had mobile phones since 2000. I had never broken any of my phones, not even once, UNTIL I bought a Z3 Compact. My impression is that it was falling in pieces. First, the back of the phone broke by itself. Then, a fall off 20cm high has broken the front. When I was calling Sony it slipped through my hand and fell on top of my pen, on my desk aaaaand, another crack.

I have lost my money. This phone felt fragile from the first day, as you can almost twist it in pieces if you want. I am not alone and I am never going back to Sony mobiles.

OBS: I waited to buy from the Sony Centre: crap headphone included. When it first broke the glass by itself, they asked me to ring the number. Servicing is with a 3rd party company in Sydney, so Sony doesn't even touch it.
