DSLR for hobby family portraits and profiles etc
My lights and shades are all from ebay..works like a charm…
I however use a proper Canon flash I picked up to work as remote flash.
Are items like this worth it

Yep.
And I have fold able shades and reflectors as well.
Mrs bought a softbox kit with backdrops from seller "global.living'. Scored their whole 575W kit on auction for $96 (plus $19.95 shipping). I was pretty impressed with that score considering the normal going rate for them. All seems pretty decent quality and good for a home setup (admittedly she hasnt used this setup yet, only shooting on location!)
Also consider a speedlite (for re-aiming the flash elsewhere), generic remote (canon ones are normally around $1 shipped from HK, exact same as genuine).
(for the record, I'm not affiliated in any way with them and since she hasn't actually used them yet I cant talk about how they actually work!)
This is what she got for about $116 shipped
I used flood lights from Bunnings :)
How good do you need the lighting? How good as your camera?
