Electricity Supply Charge When Supply Disconnected?

Just looking for some advice:

I've got a property that was vacant since mid September 2014. Origin continued to supply electricity to the premises until late January. In that time, there has been residual consumption that I will be paying for.

I had the power reconnected late last week and on the bill, but I've been charged daily "Supply Charge" for the period which there was no electricity supplied.

I called them up and they told me that the supply charge applied for every day in which there is an electricity meter at the premises, which sounds ludicrious as it's not billed as a "Meter charge."

So should I be liable to be paying the daily supply charge for the period which they did not provide supply to the premises, or, as the name suggests, I should only pay for the days that electricity has actually suppied?

Thanks.

  • It sounds like you never disconnected the power.
For everyday you have the ability to use electricity they will charge you a supply charge even though you didn't use any.

  • Have you asked Origin to disconnect you in mid September 2014? Or just haven't used it?

  • if they disconnect there's a disconnect fee

  • You didn't disconnect the power - for which there would have been a fee - or reconnect it - for which there would have been another fee. Therefore electricity has been available to use at the property throughout all this period of time & a daily supply charge is applicable. Whether , in hindsight it would have been cheaper to disconnect & then reconnect as opposed to leaving it ready to go, is a question you should ask the company.

  • Thanks for the responses. Sorry I may not have been clear on this. Origin disconnected it themselves in late January, as there was no account holder for the premises after the previous tenants moved out.

I had to get the power reconnected when I called them last week. There was no electricity supplied to the premises between when they disconnected the power in late January until last week Friday. That's the period I believe I shouldn't be paying a daily supply charge.

    • If all you are saying is correct & you can prove it - then No you definately should not have to pay a daily charge. Take it further, as it would seem they are in the wrong in this instance.

  • If the power was disconnected then a supply charge should not apply. If in doubt speak to the Electricity Ombudsman
