iPhone 16GB deal

Looking at getting an iPhone shortly. This will be my first so not too sure about what I'll need to look out for in terms of plans.

Currently on 3 $39 cap (12 months into 24 month plan) and need to get out of it.

Spoke to Optus today and they will pay me $250 to get out of the 3 contract to go on their $79 (free iPhone) plan + free 16gb iPhone.

Since I'm really not very familiar with the mobile market, I'd love it if someone more savvy could inform me of a decent iPhone deal at the moment.

I'm even happy to buy the phone outright, but when is the best time to buy and what price to buy it for.

make sure the iphone is not the older generation (i.e. Iphone 3g). The newer one is iphone 3gs.

Also, i dont think optus has the best deal on the iphones at the moment. Last i checked, 3 has one of the best deals ($49 cap, $5 phone and free on higher cap plans) but that could have changed. Cant check at the moment as im typing this from my n95.

+1 to whirlpool. Also consider buying the phone outright, then going somewhere like TPG or exetel who offer great cap deals, without the 12 month lock in contract
