Is The 28degrees Mastercard Able to Be Used in South Korea?

Hi,

I wanted to inform 28degrees of impending overseas travel and have been informed by someone at GE money that my 28degrees mastercard cannot be used in South Korea.

I find it hard to believe that this is the case. Has anyone had this issue?

Thanks

  • This type of aggressive sales is disgusting

    You will have no problems

edit: took this the wrong away and assumed they tried to sell you something else

I used it in Seoul and Busan Oct '14 no issues.

    • Nah they didn't try to sell me anything, but said it wouldn't work in South Korea. So weird!

I tried to inform them so it won't get suspended, but they said it wouldn't work.

Ryunite, did you inform them before traveling?

I did inform them and they made no claims of what you have stated. Weird indeed.
Anyway, you should be fine. Enjoy your trip!

I used in Seoul Jan '14 with no issues.

I used in South Korea without any issues.. Seoul, Busan, Jeju.. all good

  • Great thanks all

I'll need to chase them up again and see if someone else can help me out.

    Had you informed 28degrees beforehand?

  • Are you talking about making purchases or cash advances?

A friend of mine tried to use the Citibank ultimate Visa card to withdrawal cash from ATMs in South Korea, and couldn't get it to work, even with Citibank ATMs.

    • No just for purchases.

Was great for cash advances until they started charging!

Have applied for the citibank card, but may have left it too late

I used Citibank Plus debit in Seoul for withdrawals, no problems. I used Citibank branch ATMs - I tried to use one at a Subway once but it seemed to want to charge a fee. Fortunately, Citibank has a pretty big presence in Seoul.

Also used a Bankwest Mastercard, but not much (mostly paid cash).

      • Thanks for the info, I'll pass it on to my friend. She's living back in Korea now, but said she hasn't been able to access the money on her Citibank card. For some reason, she didn't go for my other suggestion to just transfer it to me :)

That is odd, I also used it in South Korea and many other countries in the region. No probs at all!

Yes, as others have said, I have had no problems using my 28 Degrees MC for purchases in South Korea and I have used it many times over there.

As for withdrawing money from ATMs, a lot will only work with local (Korean) debit cards. At banks they usually have a number of ATMs and 1 or 2 usually allow withdrawals with international debit Visa/Mastercard cards (some with no fees). Citibank have a reasonably extensive coverage of ATMs and all should work with international cards.

It is also likely that all ATMs at Incheon Airport will work with international debit cards so to make things easier it would be good to withdraw money when you first arrive in Korea.

  • Thanks very much for the clarification everyone. I thought it was unlikely to be the case.

I suspect that the person I spoke with initially thought it referred to North Korea, but cannot tell.

All sorted out now with a second call to customer service at 28degrees

  • For purchases, no problem. For cash advance, only a few banks' ATMs work. Only those bank can do foreign transactions will accept your card, else will reject.

  • Hi OP,

Have you returned from your trip to South Korea yet?

I am going to South Korea next week and would like to know if my 28degrees card can be used.

    Cheers!

Howdy mishmish, yep it worked fine for purchases. I think the original person i spoke to at 28degrees was thinking i was going to north Korea. Make sure you let them know about your travel plans at 28 degrees so they don't suspend the card when you are away. Enjoy the trip, and 21 dishes per meal.
