Modem for NBN Fxed wiresless

Hello

Would anyone be able to help me find a Modem that would be suitable to use for NBN Fixed wireless?

I have no idea where to start…… I have not chosen my service provider, I am not particulary looking for a bargain just one that is a good price, good quality and specs and should last a few years.

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

  • Why don't you find a provider first and see if they have any deals on their own equipment. Most providers include installation and equipment in the package and don't support BYO modems, as they cant provide Tech support on every modem available. Also I'm pretty sure a bargain qualifies as good price/quality/endurance :D

You can use your existing router or modem. While there are 'NBN ready' modems and such on the market, if you own a relatively new device (say, no more than 3-4 years old) you should be able to connect without an issue.

You may also be provided a free or discounted device when you sign up, so why not just wait until you actually find a provider first?

    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tools/charts/router/view
has a list of routers ranked by WAN to LAN Throughput (which is, how fast it can pass information from the WAN port to your local network). As you can see, the Netgear Nighthawk takes the top spot, but for the bargain seeker I would recommend the TP Link Archer C7 which is half the price of the Nighthawk and does the job pretty well, considering it's price.

    • As scrimshaw says, you won't actually need a modem.
Any router with a WAN port should do the trick..

  • I am using iiNet and they provided their own modem with VOIP facility in 24 months plan. The modem is simply crap and its maximum range is 8-10m. My old $40 Netgear modem is better than iiNet but it does not have VOIP function. While searching for modem please include VIOP function also as an option.

  • Thanks for the advice. I am currently using a vodaphone pocket wifi which looks like it has now carked it this morning!

I think my next step will be to choose a provider, see what modems they are offering and then go from there.

    Thanks again
