any idea what the policy is on data retention? where the servers are based?

    • Server locations here:

      https://getflix.zendesk.com/hc/en-gb/articles/204476204

Don't know about data retention policy though.
      Anyone has any idea?

      • yup, had a look at the servers.. decent selection..For those who dont know about VPN's.. Some of the VPN's will log your data like ISP address for a few days before erasing them. If a court serves them an order during the time your data has been held, your details will be handed over
There are some VPN's who dont hold your log in details.
It will be interesting to find out Getflix policy. I use their service for accessing US netflix..

  • Just tried it. Surprisingly, only a slight drop in speed for me. Pretty cool. They could've easily have charged extra for this feature.

    • it is fast right now as i imagine there is not much server load.. will be interesting to see what happens when a few users are logged onto the server..
      But free is free ;)

      • +3

Actually, I'm wrong, so wrong. I didn't have it set up correctly. The hit on my speed is MASSIVE, 30mbps slower.

Update: Switched to a different server, even worse. From 36mbps to 0.8. Nice that this is free, but it's not going to be practical for most.

        • Let's hope this will get better. Essentially their VPN is still in beta

        • @ultra64: Yeah, will definitely give it another go at a later point. Can't complain about it being free too :)

  • I signed up for the free trial last night and haven't paid anything, I have just received the email and have been given a username and password for the VPN

    • That's great! That means any active subscribers would be eligile!

      • Sorry my mistake, they have gave me a password but I can't use it. Sorry people

  • Awesome news especially since getflix is pretty cheap

  • sounds too good to be true….

  • Very happy with Getflix right now!!!

    • Yep, me too :)

  • Can you say watch Game of Thrones from HBO the day after it's broadcasted or it's only live tv ? Just not familiar with the method.
Say we have SBS channels on TV and later on you can watch most of the ongoing shows on the SBS on demand.

    • You can watch it on HBO Now at any time of your choosing after it's broadcast. There's no waiting. It's easy to get the trial if you have an iOS device because you don't have to provide a payment method (just download a free app in the US iTunes store on a PC and create a new US account at that point) but paying for the service is trickier because as I understand it they're blocking (or contacting users with) non-US cards.

      • When I click on any of the Episodes in the window that it opens, on the left side it recommends to get a HBO NOW subscription and on the right it say skip and go to HBO GO and that's when it says I am not in US. I would like to know if it's possible to watch it from HBO GO if I had GetFlix as it's listed in the channels it provides may be in SD rather than HD or something.

My friend has a VPN service but that one doesn't include HBO Go and it's only HBO NOW so we couldn't test it.

        • HBO GO is only available to people that have an existing cable subscription in countries where the HBO channel is an option. I'm not aware of any way to get a HBO GO account in other circumstances. HBO Now is the standalone streaming service that doesn't require a cable TV subscription.

Edit: So Getflix will allow you to watch HBO GO but only if you have an existing HBO GO account (which is up to you to get).

whats the difference between dns over vpn and full vpn?

    From Whirlpool
DNS-over-VPN = you still use your regular internet connection, but the DNS servers are changed only. This is for people who travel (eg hotels, airports), or who use getflix on 3G/4G networks, or who manage to stream a lot of TV on free wifi. Use this in these situations where you really don't care who sees what you are doing.

Full VPN = all your data is encrypted. This is slower for watching TV because all your data is being encrypted, then going from your device to the VPN server, decrypted, then sent on. it's more secure but the speed isn't quite as fast. Use this in any country with a data retention law, or where you are travelling and the hotel/mobile carrier has a copy of your passport.

That's the wrong terminology for the first definition. There's no VPN involved, only a DNS service which might cause some of your traffic to be routed through a proxy in another country. The most common term for that type of service (like Getflix have traditionally offered) is Smart DNS. VPN offers an added layer of privacy but generally slows your connection. If your interest is just dodging geo-blocks, Smart DNS is the best choice.

    • So in this case, Getflix is a DNS over VPN service and now offering a full VPN due to this new thing in this post?

      • It offers two services - a Smart DNS service and a VPN service.

The Smart DNS service has never used a VPN and doesn't now.

The VPN service also includes a DNS service but that's not really required for dodging geoblocks in this case (as you don't need to proxy your traffic because you already have an overseas IP address) but it does help with privacy (DNS leakage).

        • thanks

    • So DNS over VPN makes the remote site think you are in USA, Canada or whatever while the data goes direct to you, whilst VPN redirects all data via a intermediary, therefore your speed will be limited by the shared capacity of the intermediary.

  • I would say they are trying to make themselves better value than other purely DNS services.

    • Hence why their VPN side of things won't hold up against the dedicated VPNs. At least they aren't charging extra for the service.

        The VPN is painfully slow…

        Getting around 100kb/s

        • +1

You do have to bear in mind that every existing subscriber has just got the same email, and is saying "hmm, VPN for free, I'll just check that out…"

        • @sane: Yep, agreed. It's also in beta so I'm not judging it yet.

Just gonna leave this link here for users setting up their DNS via router with a shitty Telstra router http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1877528

It's a life saver if you have a read through.

  • Nice! Especially for free!
I just tested the main ones and found that the Netherlands ones were quickest for me.

My only concerns with the service are:
    1) Is there any IP Leak protection at all?
    2) Is there an inbuilt "Kill Switch", for when/if the VPN connection drops, so you are not left exposed.
    3) As others have mentioned, what logging is done\kept.

    Otherwise, looks promising!

    • Kill Switch? Not that I could find.

Deleting the default route associated with your non-VPN local network will do the trick.
ROUTE DELETE 0.0.0.0 if xx (where xx is the interface number for your non-VPN local network)

Works because this leaves the only default route (external access) via the VPN. When VPN drops you have no external access.

To recover access, close your download or whatever, Disable then Enable your local physical interface to get the deleted route back, and start over.

      • Can this be set up in Windows or on Android? Or is it a router level configuration? Where about do I set this?

        • Setup on client eg. If Windows use the CMD prompt run as System Admin. ROUTE PRINT will show your routes. The ones with 0.0.0.0 are the default routes.

  • I am getting half the speed via Getflix

  • hey guys. Got Getflix a while back to watch US Netflix, happy so far. I've pressed the button to go full VPN, so do I have to do anything else? There's a password etc provided at the top, where would i input that?

    thanks!

    • +1

nickyd84 you have to go into your network settings and create a new connection and put the user name and password in there also change security protocols etc… I found it pretty easily on the getflix site (and I have had a few rums by this time on a friday night!!)

      • nickyd84 - I have posted further down how I managed to make this work.

And saturday night - back on the rums.

  • I haven't really investigated this but does anyone else who has Telstra cable having issues with changing the DNS at the device level(not router - haven't tried)? It appears that Telstra has blocked DNS changes so this VPN is a bonus since I have a yearly membership.

On T cable, no problem here using Getflix DNS connected to Sydney server.

Which DNS server are you using? Try changing it.

      • Sydney one aswell. I'll try again, thanks.

  • Getting 3.69Mbps down, 1.56Mbps up. HK server.

  • Yeah I tested a few different ones.

    2-5 Mbps typical speeds.

Good speed of 40Mbps to Sydney & Melbourne Servers, but frankly i don't see the point of using an aussie VPN.

San Jose was around 3-5Mbps - non VPN was around 35Mbps.

I have 50Mbit NBN for reference and speed test at a constant 50Mbps even during peak.

Will definitely be handy when they start blocking access to torrent sites and usenet indexers which will happen soon as a result of the Aus Gov't signing up to the TPP.

    Is this even legal?

  • What's minimum annual/discounted cost and I take it no data limit. Apologies if I've missed those somewhere.

    • n/m. happy with my 12 dollar uFlix Ac & okayfreedom cyberghost for now.

  • Pretty slow on the argentina site.

Luckily only 3 REVENGE episodes left…

  • Will people who sign up now get the VPN as well?

Or is this only for if you had an account prior to today?

Edit: I just read the deal properly…guess it's for those who were existing.

  • can some on explain it in simple terms how to use it?

    • go to getflix.com.au

go to support top right hand corner.

Go to VPN left hand side

      Go to FULL VPN

use button to turn on FULL VPN.

click on hyperlink to how to setup.

Choose which protocol you think suits your needs.

Click on relevant setup how to depending on which protocol you prefer.

When setting up use username and password at top of page.

When you want to cover your tracks in the internet, use this VPN connection instead of your normal one.

  • Using Panama and getting decent speeds but drops out every 15 minutes or so

  • I get some decent speed compared to other VPN providers from this. Average speed is around 200-500kb.It is still not stable tho, get disconnected very often. So I would suggest anyone using Bit…what? to use some kind of Kill-switch to be on the safe side.

5 ways to protect yourself when your VPN connection fails

    • After starting VPN try deleting all default routes other than the one for your VPN. When VPN drops there will be no external access. See my earlier comments.

      • If you are torrenting, the best solution is to use a torrent client such as Vuse and bind to the interface. Vuse will immediately stop downloading when the VPN drops out. After drop out, all you have to do is re-connect the VPN.

But this only works for torrents.

  • Are there any limits download wize?

  • Anyone know how to set this up with openvpn on a router

  • Anyone knows if getflix works on premierleaguepass in NZ? Thanks!!

  • Poor vpn service. the only good speed I have achieved was using the australian servers. So I do not fell confident using this service tunelling to an Australian server but I must say that I was very impressed with my vpn upload speed of 3mbps when non vpn it was 0.4mbps . Besides that, I am way happier using PIA I am only loosing 20% of speed with their service however pia has sometimes speed drops and connection drops. Whats more is they are the best best vpn service according to cnet.com

I certalinly recommend getflix for dns masking :D

    Cheers guys.

    FYI:
MY INTERNET ADSL2+ REACHING 16MB DOWN AND 0.400MBPS UP

GETFLIX VPN (NOT AUSTRALIAN SERVER) PIA VPN CALIFORNIA
Server PING 500 ms 34 ms
DOWN 3BMPS 16.83 MBPS (THIS MORNING)
