iPhone Cloud Locked - What to Do?

so i bought an Iphone 5 off the ebay..

it was listed as parts only/not working - no mention of icloud lock.

upon receipt of the item I noted the battery was missing.

after replacing the battery, and booting it and trying to activate, it comes up icloud locked to p*****@y*****.com

the seller appears to be dodgy as hell - no feedback , no return address on package, different names used on email and paypal, etc.

apple online help are no help.

I have checked the imei and it is not reported as missing/ stolen.

apart from re-selling it for parts then what else can I do with this phone?

Sounds like you bought a stolen phone

    • This. The phone is most likely stolen.

    parts only

seems pretty clear to me that you could only use the phone for parts.

  • Open a paypal dispute not as described.
he didn't say anything about the battery missing. or did he?

Hence it was listed as parts ONLY… It was probably assumed that you'd use it for parts for your existing iPhone not try and repair it

Different names on email and paypal isn't necessarily dodgy. His work email might be linked to his paypal account for example and his eBay account might be linked to a personal one. Not putting a return address on shows more laziness as you can track him through eBay.

    Nothing….

You can't do a paypal dispute if it was listed as parts/ not working because you accepted that condition. iCloud lock counts as not working…. You can resell the phone and try and scrape back some of the money you paid for it or cut your losses and move on. Next time be careful.

    • not working is fair enough for the icloud lock but that does not excuse missing internal parts which require it to have been taken apart to get to unless it was stated no battery in the description.

  • It doesn't cost anything to do a pay pal dispute, worth a try.

    • I'm sure parts/not working don't have to have all the parts…

Thank you for the link jzdhgkd they don't….

I'm hoping you can see the irony of your own post here :-)

    • If the OP lists it with a more fulsome description that would be fair.

      • agreed

        • that was my point. Ultimately if it is a lost stolen/phone and I can return it to the original owner then great.

Kudos to you then mate, not enough people like this in the world !

    From ebay:

    For parts or not working

An item that does not function as intended and is not fully operational. This includes items that are defective in ways that render them difficult to use, items that require service or repair, or items missing essential components. See the seller's listing for full details.

I don't think the seller deliberately misled you otherwise why would they have specified "for parts only/not working"

Even if the item listing doesn't explicitly say "battery missing", surely some of the onus would be on the buyer to check what is included/why the item isn't working.

  • keep it for parts as thats what it was advertised for.
    no misleading at all.

hope you only paid a few dollars for it.
