  • Can it be unlocked free?

    • +3

I assume that it costs money to unlock it:

"I have tried this process tonight. The process works ok>!! However the news is that the 4G USB+WIFI device which I have is locked and requires a payment of $100 to unlock it. The $100 fee is based on it being less than 6 months in use. It reduces to $20 after 6 months." http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Pre-Paid-Mobiles/Unloc…

Also Telstra 24x7 moderator said: "To get your device unlocked there is a fee to do so. If you've used teh Pre-Paid 4G device on our network for over 6 months, that fee is $27.50. If it's not been activated for over 6 months then the charge is $50 - $150 which our Pre-Paid team can confirm for you. To arrange the unlocking, and payment of the fee, you'd need to speak to our Pre-Paid team, which you can do via Live Chat: http://tel.st/nxzt or on +61 2 9242 0570 both are available 24x7. Steph - Senior Moderator - 24x7 Digital Customer Care Team" https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Pre-Paid-Mobile-Broad…

Those posts are both from 2014 so the fee may be higher now.

      • Many thanks for your help

Can unlock for under $10 here : https://www.dc-unlocker.com/

      • +2

@jesseb05 ….thanks for your advice regarding the unlock site, saved me some Tel$tra fees to unlock a Sierra Aircard.

  • Thanks op ordered 1.

  • Thanks, Trent!

Just a note for people like me.. This only will work with PC and no hotspot function.. Unless I am mistaken. That's what happened with my Optus USB stick.. can't use it as I don't carry my laptop around..

    • +12

I think you might be have been alone with that confusion, but thanks anyway.

      • with deals like this, one can get carried away..

    • +1

You can use the SIM in your WiFi modem.

    • +1

Thanks for this, I should have, otherwise, wasted $19 buck on this.

Yes I do use a Mac, as lot of web developers do ;)

    • +1

You are confusing this one, which is USB only, with some that are USB + WiFi.

  • +2

Also available for Pick Up at Officeworks for $19.00

    • +1

Yeah they price matched but they don't deliver for Free

      • At yes, the Wingle

  • Thanks OP, just wondering (probably a silly question), when it says credit expires after 30 days, does that mean from activation or order date? thanks

    • +3

      From activation.

    • +3

Included SIM will have its own expiry, it needs to be activated before this date.

      • +1

Usually how long will that be? 3 mths / 6 mths / a year?

        • +1

It can vary a lot. It's printed on the packaging next to the barcode and service number.

Edit: Obviously you can check that when you're getting it delivered. It should be a few months.

  • Have one of these for when my shared building connection goes down. Super duper quick (in Brisbane). Quicker than my previous iiNet ADSL by a long way. Obviously very expensive ($20 for 2GB if I remember right), but handy for sure.

    • +9

      YES! Its a USB dongle.
Stock standard USB dongle that happens to be 4G.
NO, its not a pocket WiFi nor is it the less common combination dongle and WiFi which would need a power adapter.
Its a standard USB dongle. Nor is it a mousetrap, stick of gum or cigarette lighter.
Oh and it's LOCKED to Telstra, somebody has already asked that one too.
Oh and YES there's a fee to unlock it. FFS.

      • +2

Can you run me through that again please KT?
I didn't get it the first 6 times I read the description
Will it trim my nose hair?

        • +1

Hey KT - Just waiting for someone to ask 'Will it work on Mars?' - wouldn't surprise me at all, lol

  • +1

Can you replace the sim with those $10/3GB telstra sims that pop up every now and then?

    • -1

So long as it is a Telstra sim, it should work with a Telstra locked modem, I think Telstra is the only Telco that locks their hardware, hardly anyone does that nowadays, it's so pre NBN days.

      • +1

Most Telecommunications Agencies lock their prepaid devices. Optus and Vodafone do according to recent deals on here.

  • +3

How many seconds of data is this?

  • 30 day expiry kills it for me

  • +1

So you use less than 2GB in a month…

  • What's the expiry (ie for activation) on these things normally any one know? I don't need one now but would be handy to have if it can be activated within a year or something.

    • +1

      I don't personally know m8 but I'm sure the Telstra 24/7 team could answer that q :)

    • -2

      ad says 30 days

      • +3

        OMG

    • +2

      @dins
The expiry date is usually 12-18 months and is written on the packaging. I still have some of the MF60's left from a previous deal and there expiry is June 2016.

      • +2

Yeah I was guessing that's what he meant, cheers for the info :)

      • +1

        Cheers fellas much appreciated :)

  • So this is for people who don't have a 4g capable smartphone to share fast internet?

    • That takes quite a bit of battery power. And my PC has no wifi. But I guess it's more for laptops.

The last time I had a telstra modem, I used it when there was a planned all day power outage at home.

Also my mobile plan doesn't come with much data. This is cheap for 2GB of data.

  • +1

Not bad, but not tablet/phone compatible, so pass.

    • May work on a rooted Android with a USB OTG using the PPP dialer app.

  • Can the sim card be used in a HUAWEI E5776S 4g router (unlocked)?

Just discovered that 4g broadband is 8 times faster than iinet adsl in my area ;—(

    iinet adsl 3.6 Mbps

Lumia 1020 speedtest using 4 g on telstra, 15-23 Mbps

Is voip reliable when using a 4 g router (telstra)?

  • Lacks 4G700 doesn't it ? probably why going cheap.
That and no batt./Wifi. dreadful metering

  • Can these be used with tablets if a tablet has a usb port? Maybe with the micro to usb conversion?

  • Just received mine. Btw the expiry on it is Sep 2016 so all good. Cheers! :)

  • bought 2 , went to buy another 2 but now they are charging for delivery :(

    • just pick them up :)

      • none in the act …:(

  • Nice deal - arrived today.
Can also put in the Telstra $30 starter pack SIM (from Woolies deal earlier this year).
Activate as an ipad for 3GB

    • Really? JB HIFI told me you can't use the $30 Telstra sim starter kits on these devices. The sim in my device looks quite large compared to the one I normally use for my mobile. I'm kinda confused with which sim to buy to recharge this device.

Kind of regretting buyng it now due to the 30 day expiry. I Only purchased it because my TPG wifi at home is on and off atm, some days it's good some days it's not. It's been bad 7 out of 30 days- nowhere near enough for my to use the 2GB that came with the device….

      • You really need to start by reading this wiki then (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/telstra_pre-paid_starter_pack_guide?s[]=telstra)
