People I know who have done similar challenges ate mainly rice and baked potatoes.
Rice and potato = starch and sugars == Carb!
Yes they're cheap, but when eaten in large quantities they give you a blood sugar spike. And they don't particularly make you feel as full as eating actual fat. So make sure you get some fatty foods in — this includes pork belly, bacon, certain nuts (say, peanuts) and vegetable fats (say, avocados). Foods high in fat are 'high satiety' and make you feel full.
You can still eat potato, rice bread and noodles without getting fat, but you'll have to restrict your intake of these foods to actually lose weight. If your goal is to lose weight fast then you'll have to really restrict carbs down to around 60g a day to really see results (YMMV).
TLDR cut the bloody carbs if you want to lose weight. Eat more vegetables. Don't be afraid to eat butter.
Exactly, it's carb central! The challenge highlights how difficult it is to eat balanced on such a tight budget. The cheapest things that fill you up are full of carbs. The reality is though you could afford very little meat on a weekly budget of $10. What about eggs, fairly cheap and offer slightly more nutrition?
Eggs are good. Cheap and purchasable in bulk. You will have to buy caged eggs (Oh no, the ethics police are bashing my door down as I type this) to perhaps fit them into your budget, however, you can buy bulk vegetables from the markets, and you can buy lower quality meats to supplant your protein intake.
Cheese is also good — it's fatty and fills you. Make sure you buy big blocks of cheese (like Coon) for maximum savings, and not pre-shaved or sliced cheese. Eat it with your eggs, sprinkle it on your grilled vegetables (my favourite is grilled eggplant pizza with cheese and pepperoni on top — delicious and cheap)
Though I'm fairly certain it is NOT possible to buy any decent kind of meat with per-meal budget of $10… probably only crappy sausages. Be careful of carby meats — meats containing filler material like dough and breadcrumb. Just make the crumbs yourself if you want a chicken schnitzel.
Look up "frugal Keto" on the Google for some ideas.
Figure with $10 you could buy a small bag rice, dozen eggs, some very cheapo vegies (fresh/homebrand frozen), few pieces fruit (on special), cheap milk (rationed), homebrand cereal, maybe $0.80 loaf bread. You'd survive, but it wouldn't be much fun.
I would skip the cereal and bread for some mince, burger patties or snags instead, for the protein instead of carb. You would get sick of eating eggs very quickly, if it is your only source of protein.
does it count if i get free spuds from spud shed? ;)
i wonder if they have spud shed in cambodia
Ur diet will revolve around getting free food on ozbargain!
Just hope delivery hero brings back the 20 dollar vouchers!
You'll need to focus on low GI foods, to help you with energy levels ( good slow release of energy)
They will be a bit more expensive though so will need to say buy in bulk or pick one or two ( maybe mornings and lunch)
Wholemeal bread, brown rice etc

Also how old are u and what do u do for a living
If ur a uni student living off campus go for it, if your in ur 30-40 with a job, it's gonna be tough with energy levels etc
Also have u had a medical check up, you don't want to be going on this if you have a pre exisiting condition like diabetes etc!
great idea! because its actually 2 dollars a day I said 8$ because its for 4 days :) ;)
fruits, vegetable, and eggs. that will do.
You need energy, unfortunately most of the energy dense foods you'll be able to afford are full of fat.
Part of the reason there are a lot of overweight homeless and poor people.
