Repairing The Keyboard for Acer Aspire

One letter fell off my Acer Aspire keyboard which is still under warranty (this has never happened to any of my laptops). Acer claims that the repair does not fall under warranty and wants to charge me $109 for the repair (replacement of the whole keyboard).
Any suggestions as to an alternative way of repairing it - or of ways of getting Acer to repair it for free.
This is obviously the last Acer I shall ever buy.

  • You can attempt to self repair. Search on eBay for "Acer aspire XXXXX keyboard" where XXXX is model / name.

    Replacing the keyboard itself is not a highly challenging task, but your mileage may vary depending on how the laptop was put together and whether it was made with maintenance in mind.

    If it's only ONE key that you need to fix, it's possible to order just one from http://www.laptopkey.com/.
    The cost I believe is $5 bucks plus shipping. Not cheap, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying the whole keyboard.

  • or you could buy a new one. unless this one is special, surely they're dead cheap. i've got three in a cupboard, and lots of people have spare keyboards or you could probably pick one up for a few dollars if you dont trip on the masses of them that people leave on their nature strips fot the hard rubbish collectors to dispose of.

    • Keyboards on the street are usually external desktop keyboards…

      How old is the computer?
      I'd be calling acer and requesting a warranty repair. Why isn't it covered? The issue with doing it yourself and something else breaks or fails (Say the hard drive) you might not be covered at all…

      If the warranty is going to run out in few months go ahead but and I know people will disagree with me because it's Ozbagain but if it is a new laptop I'd push acer to actually fix it for free.

      • Just out of interest, I had a bit of correspondence with Acer - they quoted the warranty card which says (roughly) nothing external on the laptop is covered by the warranty. I could see that I shall not get anywhere with them. This will be a warning for next time, I shall read the warranty carefully. Perhaps other brands cover keyboards?

        • Contact them and mention the Australian Consumer Law. Not sure who you spoke to but maybe they weren't in Australia and aware of the ACL.

        • @knick007:

          no brands cover keyboards

          if it loses keys that is considered wear and tear

          @tonyjzx: I'm saying if the laptop is under 2 years old which presumably it is that it should be covered under the ACL as that is not a reasonable amount of time for the keys to last.

          @knick007:

          problem with that is that you say the keys fell off by themselves

          company says that in normal usage, keys dont fall off

          this is acer we are talking about, a company with a spotty service record

          i'd be inclined to side with the company here, with all the laptops i've used, they keys dont fall off by themselves

          i would love it if acer covered it, they dont

        • @tonyjzx:

          cant be wear and tear, under ACL it would be reasonable that keyboard on a computer would last for the warranty period.

          But I'll say, I have never had a key fall off any laptops I have ever had.

          @PVA:

          Neither have I. however there are duds that come out…

  • Thank you. I'll probably try for the whole keyboard.

    • How did you get on? I looked into keyboard repair for Aspire 5741 and found a great instructional site and also a YouTube video. Looks easy as to do for that model. Keyboard was $23 delivered from Ebay. While there I'm going for a ram upgrade, an SSD as a boot drive, an HDD optical drive caddy, so swapping out the DVD for the original Hdd reformatted. Going to give my 5 year old lappy a wicked boost. I guess battery life might be a bit shorter but for about $170 she'll be red hot again and another $30 she'll have a brand new battery.
