Cheapest way to run 2560 x 1600 resolution monitor?

hey guys, I need to run a max resolution of 2560x1440.

Anyone know what a good laptop for this would be..or a great mini pc that can run a resolution this high?
Don't really want to play games, just movies and a bit of youtubing/watching HD streams, netflix etc, but main reason is for playing online poker and to fit more poker tables on the screen comfortably without overlap.

My monitor goes up to 2560 x 1440 resolution, also need hardware to run 12 tables whilst not being too slow running poker tracking software and multiple sites all at once.

any help much appreciated!

  • Most laptop's HDMI outputs cannot support resolutions beyond 1080p. For anything higher, you're going to have to use Dual Link DVI or a Displayport cable. In most cases you're probably going to end up using the Displayport.

Some examples of recent laptops with DP are possibly Dell XPS series and Macbook, but if you don't want a laptop, it is easy to simply built a mini-PC using the mini-ITX standard and then throw in any graphics card with at least a DisplayPort output.

Or buy a Gigabyte Brix. These are small form factor PC's with MiniDP.

I've actually noticed in many of these cases, it's not the laptop that's at fault. Most laptop HDMI ports can push out higher resolutions. It's pretty rare to find a laptop that is not at least HDMI 1.3 (released back in 2006) which supports 2560×1600p/60Hz - assuming that the GPU can push it out.

It's more often the display itself. Dell are especially bad for this, there are plenty of forum posts elsewhere of people having to hack the EDID files of the monitor to get the full res working over HDMI instead of DVI or Displayport.

  • The new macbook air 11" can run a 4K display via DP.

  • thanks guys, I'm not in love with the apple layout so I'll stick to windows or android.
Those ITX and Gigabyte boxes are the way to go.
    Thanks for your help :)

  • Do you currently do this on another machine with a smaller display? Just trying to determine if upgrading an existing machine would do the trick for you instead of something new.
