NetComm Wireless NB16WV-02 N600 Modem Router with VoIP for $98.93 at Officeworks

70

I got this modem the other day because my old Netgear was about to die and I couldn't get reliable Netflix streaming. Installed it last night in less than 10 minutes and it works like a charm. I now get 15Mbps connection instead of my previous 12Mbps. Netflix has been running smooth so far. VoIP setup was also painless. I did notice that the wifi signals (both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) are not as strong but I live in a unit and range is not too much of an issue. But all-in-all, I'm happy with the purchase.

Original price was around $179 when I checked in store last week and was about to price match using Mwave price of $122. It was good that I checked the OW website because it now lists it as $98.93. Weird pricing, I thought. Plus it was hidden under the classification of just "Modems" instead of "Wireless Modem Routers". Still around 2-3 units on the shelf at OW Chatswood that day. It was still marked at its original price but scanned correctly. Indicates "limited stock" for my store and some of the other Officeworks stores nearby. In stock at OW North Ryde.

  • Just wondering if you have a Chromecast to connect to it?

Nope, sorry. Believe it or not, my television set does not have HDMI. I had to resurrect my old Wii (circa 2007) to get Netflix on my TV. The router connects great even of 802.11g.

      • Lol thats the first I've heard anyone using Netflix on an old Wii. Awesome !

My old Philips TV doesn't want to die so I really can't justify buying a new one. So I'm stuck with just DVI input for my HD viewing. Luckily, the Wii can do 480p using the Component (Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr) input on my TV. Looks fine on my 32" Philips.

@dimagiba: I admire your none consumerist behavior.
I feel sometimes so much is wasted when you can make what you have work.

          Good ya.

Someone give this bloke an OZB badge

    • Got this modem last Thursday and was about to prove match with MSY when they told me the new price. Lucky.

Haven't tested the USB feature yet, anyone have any thoughts on it?

Also how do you go about connecting Chromecast to it?

The chromecast connects via wi-fi. You'll need the chromcast app running in your browser or on a phone/tablet on the same wi-fi network, then you plug the Chromecast itself into a HDMI port on your monitor/TV/ AV amp and follow the instructions on the screen to connect it to your wi-fi.
If you have an Android device with a version > 4.3, you can also use the chromecast in "guest" mode, as an ad hoc wi-fi device without connection to your network, but the chromecast itself will need a wi-fi connection to the internet for anything more than mirroring.

        • Oh, I knew that. By reading the above pays to quickly I thought people connected the Chromecast directly to the router. I thought WTF?

Has anyone tried connecting a USB HDD to the router yet?

  • AVOID. I bought it last year and always dropping off, then Netcomm replaced it for me and still having issues.

Finally I realized this thing can't do QOS properly as my net speed will drop to a third when simply adding a rule or two. The second 5Ghz band is week and need to manually connect every time. Packet filtering is not doing what is it supposed to do. All rules are just bypassed.

If you don't need to do packet filtering or QOS then may be as I can't fault it's voip capabilities. Haven't tried 3G either.

    • Agreed. I got one of these bundled with my ADSL plan and it was pretty crappy. Died after less than 2 years.

  • I bought one of these and promptly moved it on, great wifi strength, but the VoIP is FXS only, no FXO ports. You can not receive calls from the land line number eg. your ADSL line. Went to a Billion 7800vdpx to achieve this.

    • Works best for me to have VoIP and PSTN on separate phone handsets. I've inadvertently racked up a significant phone bill on my old Sipura SPA-3000 when my wife didn't realize that she was using the landline instead of the VoIP when PSTN fallback kicked in.

  • This is the same modem iinet rolls out. The voip port is handy when on nbn. Just register sip and connect crappy telstra pstn phone and answering machine.

  • How many SIP accounts can it register?

    • Only one but I find it better to use a virtual PBX for all that. I use Sipsorcery but a free account at Pbxes.org can very well do the trick.

      • Good point. I use 3CX

  • Seems like they are getting rid of the stock. Saw that the price got dropped to $80.26 and three are on stock in Hornsby OW.
