Paying back the GST refund

I bought a Dell laptop online. I got the GST refund at Tourist Refund Scheme when I traveled overseas. I brought the laptop back to Australia after the trip. Because the laptop had some problems and Dell couldn't fix it, I refund it. Dell gave me the full refund (including GST). So they ended up paying me twice.

I called the Tourist Refund Scheme and left a message saying I want to pay back the refund. (You're supposed to leave a message then they will contact you). About one hour later, they called me. They asked if I have a credit card. I said no. They asked to me to send a scan of the receipt to their email then they would figure out how it can be done. I sent them the receipt. Now, after a week, they haven't called me.

Has anyone got the same experience?

    this is very un-ozbargain like!!
why would you bother even contacting them to refund it? seems like more of a hassle for everyone than anything else…
however, if you want to send me the $$ i'll kindly forward it to the tourist refund scheme for you ;)

      Thanks for your reply.

It says "If it is shopping related and does not fall into other forums, then post it here!". I think this is shopping related, so I posted here.

The laptop which I bought is Dell Vostro 1520. That model has serious flaws. One thing is that it freezes randomly. That's unbearable. I got no choice but to refund it.

    • :-)

      • I hope you don't mean I'm really in trouble.
        :-\

        • Of course you are not in trouble, but the people operating the tourist refund scheme must be wondering why you are bothering them to give them money ;-)

Did they charge you a service fee when they refunded your GST?

@surm: They didn't charge any fee. I just showed them the tax invoice and the laptop. The refund was deposited into my bank account a few days after that. (I think now you can choose to get cash).

I think what I did was a kind of fraud. I bought the laptop for about $1100 inc. GST, then got the refund from TRS for $100. Dell gave me 1100. Now I have totally $1200.

The government will ask Dell to give them back $100, but then Dell will say "No. There was no sale. The customer returned the item". Then they will chase after me. I don't want wait until I receive a court summon.

    • Getting a bargain doesnt have to mean being dishonest. I wouldn't like to think that this forum is composed of a bunch of fraudsters. +1 to spam12345 for his/her attempts. If they don't bother to take the money back after one or two attempts, i'd probably keep it, though.
