Not detracting from the deal, but some information. It's actually the Samsung Gear Fit - the Galaxy is not in the name. Galaxy is Samsung's branding for their products running Android. The Gear Fit, Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are all running Tizen, Samsung's own home-brew OS, not Android.

The actual device is pretty good, comfortable to wear and has a decent screen. You can read the review here: http://ausdroid.net/2014/04/24/samsung-gear-fit-smartwatch-r…

There is a bit of an issue with the Samsung Gear smartwatches in they generally need to run on a Samsung device, but here's a How-To on getting it running on any rooted Android phone:

    • Yeah I just write what the sites say, Jb call it Galaxy too :)

Seems a bit short sighted of them to make it only work with Samsung Galaxy phones. Why would they limit there market like that? It's not like people are likely to say 'love the gear fit, must buy a galaxy phone'.

      • Its more of a case of 'if I want a Gear then I'll have to buy a Galaxy next time I upgrade my phone'

I'm considering a Sony Smart Watch 3 so my options are open next time I upgrade from my Note 3.

  • Price is good but I was instantly put off by the lack of call screening. I like to have my phone on silent at work and check/answer who's calling me or emails/messages without removing my phone from my pocket. Also handy whilst driving and using hands free.

    • Lack of call screening? This would be a deal breaker for me too.
But unless I'm missing something, I think it does…

from DSE "Samsung Gear Fit equips you with instant notification of emails, texts, incoming calls and apps to keep you connected . You can also control certain basic functions, such as reject calls with a message, quickly reply to texts and control alarms."

      • Reviews I read on the site that OP listed said there weren't and tbh I don't often trust listings as much as reviews. If anyone who owns one could shed some light I'd appreciate it.

        • hmm, you can read your twitter feed and a email preview,
I'd be shocked if it didn't tell you who was calling while it is notifying you of an incomming call.

          I think I'll take the punt…

        • @pvergers: does it allow you to answer the call though? That's what I prefer.

Edit/ just confirmed it can only reject calls from watch, can't answer. I read this on an app called 'Gear Fit Phone'. Not a total deal breaker though as you can screen them, I'll have a think about it.

  • hope not! Last smart phone I saw with this function it was a nightmare as while it was paired, audio would always default to the watch which 9 times out of ten is not what you want in an office setting (unless you are maxwell smart). Youd have to answer the call (on the phone) and then quickly change the audio source to the phone before you spoke (and hopefully before they spoke)

it looks like you can reject the call with a text message though which is very handy

    • Yeah I just edited my last post.

  • had this for awhile. battery life is good but proprietary charger instead of mini usb one means i can only charge it at home. if you forgot to bring the charger with you on holiday like i did then you are really just wearing fancy wristband.
the heart rate monitor is useless during exercise but suspect that would be the case for most of optical heart rate sensor watches out there. i wear it 3 times a week in swimming pool and had no issues with it except that everytime it connected or disconnected from my phone the led will turn on and scroll around the menu as my hands inside water.
had my google music streaming to sonos and controlling the tracks and volume from my watch is nice but again that would apply to all smart watches. the only thing i love about it is the size of it and it doesnt weight much at all which is nice too

    • Are my assumptions correct (above) that it doesn't answer phone calls when connected to headphones or handsfree?

I currently have Gear 1 which can do this and all the other things I want it to but the 24 hour battery life is a killer.

      • yup thats right, you get the caller name, but you only get to either reject the call or send a predefined (it's customisable) message like 'im at gym, ill call u back etc'. although if i am using my bt headset, ability to see who is calling on my wrist and answer it with button on my headset without taking out my phone is fine by me

        • Yeah I have a Sony Bluetooth gadget that can answer the calls if I decide i want to take them, so I bit the bullet on this a few minutes ago, cheers.

  • I am looking for a cheap band/watch etc that has heart rate monitor and GPS. I don't really care about the aesthetics of the thing as I will be just using it for running and workout sessions. What are couple of recommendations?

    • definitely not this as it doesnt have gps nor reliable heart rate monitor to be used for exercise
