TP Link Archer D7 or D9 series. D7 goes for $139 on special (usually $150), the D9 when on a special goes for $199, but otherwise $230.

Both modems are using dual band 2.4ghz and 5ghz, with Wireless AC support.

Depending on which model you buy, there can be extra stuff to redeem as well.

If you don't require Wireless AC standard, you could try this TD-W8980 for $95, it has dual band 2.4+5ghz, gigabit ports, 2x usb ports and is probably one of the cheapest dual band gigabit modems around.

    • Thanks for details.
Just a basic Q … what exactly Wireless AC support mean?

      • To explain with marketing speak:

Wireless AC draft 802.11ac technology* was developed to optimize video streaming experiences. Providing Gigabit Wi-Fi speeds allows content to download faster and large video or music files to sync more quickly. With an increasing number of Wi-Fi devices in the home leading to greater Internet consumption, this new wireless draft 802.11ac standard will help you meet your digital lifestyle demands.

But to put it in very simple terms.

It's Wifi that is really, really fast, allowing you to basically stream all the high def stuff you could ever dream of between your devices. Do you have Wireless AC devices? You probably do — if you've bought a smartphone or laptop that was made in the past 2-3 years, it probably has the new AC standard.

        • Another silly Q I think… does dual band adsl2 + modem router gives better speed than the normal 40-50$ ones n300 etc?

Reason for asking is…I live in a area where most of my neighbors gets pretty much similar internet speed as 7-8mbps from same provider (tpg). Will dual band adsl2 + modem router will bump up the speed? Currently im using 8yrs Netgear misem provided by optus.

        • Eg these ones i noted from some forum:

          Asus DSL-N12E Wireless N 300 ADSL Modem

          TP-LINK TD-W8960N Wireless-N300 ADSL2+ Modem Router+4x10/100

          Netgear D1500 N300 Wi-Fi ADSL2+ Modem Router

          Belkin N300

ADSL and ADSL2+ are delivered to your home over copper wires and because of this, the speed that you can connect to the network is impacted by the distance the information travels between the telephone exchange to your home. Copper is a great material for this transmission because it has low resistance, but this resistance increases the longer a signal has to travel, and so your connection speed degrades the further along you are.

Regarding the purchase of a newer modem:
They may or may not make a difference to your ADSL line speed. Your line speed is determined by how far you are from the ADSL exchange (DSLAM). The further you are, the slower your line is. Some modems cope better with long distances, while others should be preferably used on a shorter line distance.

ADSL Modem routers are basically 2 devices in one — a modem, and a router. The thing is, ADSL modem tech hasn't changed much in the last few years, so even if you upgrade to a top-of-the-line modem you probably can't expect any more than a marginal improvement to your line speed.

Your ADSL sync speed is mostly determined by factors you can't really control — for example, the length of the copper connecting you to the DSLAM, the quality of said copper and other environmental factors.

          However, as this site explains

You can’t pick which exchange you connect to, and you can’t fix the copper connecting your house to the exchange, but you can take care of the equipment at your end.

There will however be advantages of having a dual-band wireless router because they operate on both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz network, so more speed and less interference as a result. This advantages only apply on your 'local' network (i.e LAN).

          @thehillsgirl:

these arentt dual band devices you listed.
You were asking about dual band.

The wireless part (n, ac, 2.4 5 dual band) doesnt increase you internet speed, that is the quality of the phone lines and the modem. Wireless is only between devices.

If the neighbours are getting around 8 that is what you will get, a new modem wont magically get 16mb/s etc. (but you may get say 1mbs more)

I bought a TPlink Archer D7 and its been great, I was getting around 6-7 (yes really poor) now I get around 7-8, a slight increase. What was better though was the wireless connections - phones, tv, ps3, computers all connect together better and streaming movies from a hard drive wireless to TV doesnt skip now.

If you ask at Whirlpool they will answer a lot better and get you to post a few numbers of speeds etc so then someone will recommend a good modem for you.
