NZ Jobs fair for a graduate? (And paid job fairs in general)

http://www.workingin-events.com/

Anyone ever been to one of these? It's $10 for a ticket so I'm kind of hesitant to go, just in case they want relevant experience (which I don't have) and/or don't take grads. Not much info on the website for me to figure it out. Should I bother going?

[Side Note] Been unemployed for 9 months… Yay engineering degree /sarcasm

I am new to Australia so no idea about the job fair and all. But I just saw a discount code in the MX newspaper. The voucher code is MXF and it brings down the ticket price to $5. hope it's helpful

    • Thanks! This should make my choice a little easier.

      • You were unemployed for 9 whole months?? Have you not been engaging in any sort of part time or casual work?

A 9 month gap on your resume will look very, very bad to an employer. Hopefully you have a valid excuse (like studying or training) otherwise you're putting yourself in a bad position.

Also since you are a new grad you should be eligible for career expos that are held by your university. The catch though is that big companies tend to visit the more well known and prestigious GO8 universities and don't bother visiting the smaller ones.

Still, keep in touch with your university's news and be on the lookout for career fairs.

        • Thanks for the advice. And unfortunately no, I don't really have a good reason for the gap other than the fact that I'm not hard pressed for money and am focusing exclusively on obtaining relevant (degree related) work.

        • @InfraRed:

I'm going to be blunt here, forgive me if it sounds like I'm chastising you, but I'm making you see a different perspective.

Work is better than no work. Do you think you're too well off and well-educated to work an entry level job?

If you're not making productive use of your time, people will know, and they'll ask. What are you going to say to the interviewer when they ask you what you've been doing with yourself for the past year?

If you're one of 20 people applying for jobs, and you're the only one with zero work experience, what are your chances of getting that job? Do you have any past employers who can vouch for you?

Do you think just having a uni degree makes you 'job ready'?

In either case it doesn't hurt to self-educate or failling that, educate others (e.g try tutoring). Asides from being fun, it's also good money.

        • @scrimshaw: Thanks for the reply and advice again. And sorry if what I wrote wasn't clear. I have work experience (5 years worth) it's why I'm financially stable for the moment, but it is not job relevant.

That being said, there's definitely a pride factor about me not working a part time job in the mean time so much so I've volunteered for events because I don't want to get paid until I get a degree job.

This is why I am just focused on job specific stuff, I'll always be able to get some random job for the cash but I won't always get the chance at grad positions for my degree. Now obviously if there were entry level stuff for eng companies that could lead to a proper engineering position I'd be all over it, but I don't see them (probably don't know what terms to search because 'entry level engineer' never gives me adequate results).

        • @InfraRed:

because I don't want to get paid until I get a degree job.

Then without even looking at the link, I can say you should be going to every job fair. Also canvasing prospective employers
