Rather a netgear nighthawk for that price

    • Nighthawk doesn't have a modem

      • Better to have a separate $29 modem, ADSL can throw things off on the LAN when there are line errors

        • No, not better with regards to latency. Compatibility is another issue, but all-in-ones are almost always better with that also. Your case would be very rare and only a problem with budget units.

Moot point however, because if you looked at the product you would see it has an external modem.

@grb: Latency? What kind of wiring are you thinking of using?Of course they will be compatible! It is as simply as ethernet out and into WAN of the nighthawk.

        • +3

@rapoot6: Wiring will barely effect latency even over huge runs. Multiple devices with multiple buffers/queues/processors add latency.

So we're talking multiple routers & dhcp servers/clients over multiple networks (modem on WAN), complicating configuration. Plus the suggestion was to add a cheap modem to avoid bugs, which is an oxymoron in itself. Although I agree "compatibility" is a misleading term, I should have used "ease of use" or "accessibility".

        • @grb: Ah of course. I was just not thinking deep enough. Thanks for sharing your knowledge :)

        • @grb: The latency at the local network compared to a WAN is like 1ms compared to 32ms so your wrong there buddy

If you knew anything about networking you would also know these days there is almost no compatibility issues in TCP/IP ethernet communications which is the only connection there would be between a dedicated ADSL modem and a router

You seem to be contradicting yourself but as far as "ease of use" none of these devices will "just set themselves up"

All I said was this thing is nothing like the R7000 and if people need a ADSL modem they could get a dedicated device and disable all other services on it which works far better

"Belkin has also made the decision to split its ADSL modem out into the power brick, allowing it to sell the same router model separately and bundled with a modem, reducing production costs"

This is pathetic, I would advise people to stay clear of this product
