What Have You Done to Get a Freebie?

I was just reading this article about a guy at schoolies who was dared to go naked in order to score a free kebab. He ended up arrested, fined and then went to court to get the charges dismissed. No mention if he actually claimed the free kebab.

I can't say I've done anything that extreme for a freebie but I have waited maybe 20 or minutes for free lunch. What's the longest wait/biggest task you have done for a freebie?

Not really a freebie but a while ago when petrol first reached the $1 mark I lined up on a hill with my car idling for a damn long time to get petrol for 40c a litre. I may have scraped even with the amount of petrol I bought minus the petrol I used idling.

    • You don't need a car with stop start technology to stop start your car and save fuel.

      • It was a little like Peak hour traffic and do you turn your car off when in peak hour? I'd stop for a bit, the line would move then I'd go and stop again. Found it easier to just leave it running.

Yes but the wear and tear on your battery and starter motor will cost you more than you saved in fuel.

    • Most vehicles should only use around 2l an hour to idle. Must have been there ages to use anything significant

      • Out of the allocated 1 hour window for this radio special i think i waited for about 50 minutes. I swear that Magna used up petrol when i got within 1m of it.

    • Had one of those promotions in Auckland once, pissed everyone off.

They did it on a main thoroughfare in peak hour. What was normally a 20 minutes commute took two hours and the police eventually shut it down because it brought the city to a complete standstill.

  • GYG openings are typically about 45 minute wait for a $10 burritos…

    • +1

You paid for yours?? mine was a 30 minute wait for a free burrito
EDIT- Sorry my bad you meant for a free burrito that is normally $10

    • $12 an hour ain't bad. I was expecting a greater level of depravity

When I was ~4 I stole bubblegum from the supermarket.
Mum found out when I got home and beat me.
I didn't get to eat the bubble gum.
    I never stole bubblegum again.

      Started stealing cars instead?

come to think of it, how on earth do you remember things from age 4? My own childhood is a mysterious blur to me.

      • +10

Obviously you didn't get those memories beaten into you.

Who ate the bubble gum?Your mum?

      • She threw it in the bin.

  • Nice stuff man

  • driven the entire length and width of the Perth metro area.
stood in long queues putting up with the smelly, the loud, the fidgety, the personal space invaders and being bumped by those oversized handbags.

not gone naked though….need my pockets ;)

  • I have waited in line for a freebie showbag before. About 20 mins. At an expo I spoke to a sale rep and pretended I was interested in their product when I really just needed a caffeine hit from their coffee cart, nothing too humiliating I think. I have seen old ladies push and trample over small children for a free food sample at Good Food Show.

    • ^^ this.
At the good food show, nespresso stand, it's like a nightclub waiting to get a drink at a bar. With a toddler in tow, no one would let me in to get a coffee… And this is after I'd waited for a while. Everyone just pushes through.

The dumbest thing I did was last xmas someone posted on here that CBA was giving away free dwarf statues. I felt like such an idiot standing there at China Town CBA waiting for 3pm and the release of the dwarfs. It got very heated with people pushing and shoving all for a stupid statue.

My missus does a lot of things for freebies, she is one of those full time competition entering people. We get a heap of freebies weekly but sometimes she dresses up in silly outfits and we are always taking silly selfies in public promoting brands who in turn give us freebies. She does alright, we have a couple hotel rooms and a mystery flight to use.

Sat through a pyramid scheme talk for a free lunch.

I've sat through timeshare sales spiels: once for a free dvd player, and once for a free night's accommodation

    • I don't know about a DVD player but if it's an ipad or video camera I'd go. Free night accom is not too bad! They will never leave you alone. Once my friend gave them my number - she has timeshares with this particular company. I told them to remove me and years later they are calling me again. I don't know if this is against the SPAM act.

Not really a freebie but here's the story of my life:

(HCMC, 2011) 4-hour bus commuting and 4-hour lining and being tortured by heat and sweaty smell, loud and terrible music, the lack of water, the urge to use toilet but didn't want to lose my queue at the Samsung Galaxy SLCD Exhibit.

Luckily, I was among 10 people who won a 4 mil VND (~AUD 250 - April/15) discount voucher which was the 2nd biggest prize. First price was, of course, a free phone. I paid 7 mil more to get the phone and sold it the following day for 10.3 mil, so 3.3 mil in profit.

Time has changed but phone pricing is still ridiculous!

When I was about 15 or 16 I sold my soul to a friend for 50c for a phone call. We did it Simpsons style where I wrote it out on paper and signed it.

Seeing how my life has turned out since then I regret it. That said things didn't work out so nice for him either so I don't think he took my energy and added onto his own.

  • Well, there were free Krispy Kreme boxes being handed out, I was happily waiting in line, oh wow I'm up next and then they tell me that they have ran out of stock and are expecting more in 20 minutes. Took around an hour. I was waiting first in line at the shopping centre for a hour.

Spent two hours walking to and from Subway to claim my free 6 inch sub coupon.

Not sure if this qualifies but I had to loose 5kg in weight over 10 weeks to get my $50 store credit - I did it :)

    • Congrats on your gain of $50 and loss of 5kg fat. As long as you are not too thin, I think loosing some weight makes you healthier and happier!

      • Thanks 721411, I agree with you - and no I'm not wasting away in fact I'm proud to say I'm now only Overweight as I've lost enough weight to leave the Obese category (as far as my BMI goes). One interesting realisation over these weeks is how little you need to eat to maintain your weight :)

  • A couple of years ago I got a free Ben & Jerry t-shirt for trying almost all of the flavours on the menu on their free cone day. On that occasion I wished the line moved more slowly so I could savour each tub more.

  • went to an ozbargain meetup, the free one, should of grabed the second t shirt,
