Best Go Pro for oldie

I want to buy my husband a go pro. What is the best one for snorkeling?
Want to use as an ordinary camera as well. My daughter is going to the U.S next week. Would it be cheaper to buy it there? Would I need a different plug to charge etc. thanks from a nearly illiterate tech Nanna

    Is it just for snorkeling?

I'd recommend not going with a GoPro. Grab a Canon PowerShot D30. The video quality is brilliant, photos are great and it's waterproof to 25m (~$300 in Australia, might be cheaper in the US and you'd just need to swap the power cord when she gets home).

I bought a GoPro Hero4 for scuba diving down to 40m. It's really good, and I like the video (albeit a bit fisheye at times depending on how you shoot) but if you aren't going that deep or don't need the tiny form factor of GoPro, I think you'd be better of giving it a miss. The GoPro still photos are pretty mediocre to be honest.

The Canon Powershot is setup like a normal point and shoot camera, but has a video button near the shutter button too, and it's buttons are easy to use underwater, no big bulky case etc.

    Edit:
Just in case you want to have a quick look… You can probably get it cheaper than DSE.

Similar, but not waterproof as deep: http://www.dicksmith.com.au/point-shoot/panasonic-ft5-digita…

  • hi, you'd want anything newer and including a gopro 3, in addition to the old ones no longer being sold, they have a curved lens housing, which means that it cannot focus underwater.

  • Thanks toristo and mad mouse 58. I really appreciate your help

  • If you want both underwater and taking normal touristy photos…. Go with what toristo said and go for the cannon powershot D30(or similar).

You could have a look at prices in the US e.g on amazon (don't forget to add tax!) but you could also go out and buy it from somewhere like dicksmith or JB tomorrow and your daughter can take it with her overseas and use the tax refund scheme to get a bit back. (~11%)

If you buy it in the US you'd need to use an US-AU adapter when you are in Australia to charge it.

  • Don't think that a GoPro will replace a standard camera. I have a GoPro 3 white and it takes good video, but due to the nature of the lens is only good for close up photos, but you get the fisheye effect. Anything taken of a middle distance looks like its miles away in the photos. The long distance shots are ok though.

I'd recommend getting something with a viewfinder for general use and sticking with I a GoPro or other action camera for video only.

Unless you want to be a movie producer you probably don't need anything other than the base model. As above, mine is the white version and it takes good footage at 720p and doesn't really lack anything for my purposes.

    • Thanks to all who answered. You were a great help
