Which Travel SIM for Hawaii?

Hi guys,

I will be in Hawaii for 7 days and searching for the cheapest and most convenient way to use my unlocked android phone there.

I will not make or receive many calls, mainly need it for GPS and maybe a few sms.

Found a few websites but not very knowledgeable , when I was overseas I always purchased SIM from local provider. This time I would like to have everything ready before my trip and just turn on my phone at the airport and use it.

Thank you for any advice.

Some websites I found:
( there are many other web sites obviously)

AT&T SIM on ebay

Get the one with 10gb bonus, i brought one last week for my one week trip too.
NOTE: make sure ur phone is compatable with their network

  • Yep as above, TravelSimDirect posts their US Sim deals here often. I used them when I was in the US last month.

Alternatively, lots of Aussies/international visitors go to HOKU WIRELESS (2255 KUHIO AVE STE 109) which is smack in the middle of all of the hotels in Waikiki. They'll set you up on a T-Mobile or Go Smart Sim. Check out the Prepaid Data Sim Card Wiki

  • In the US I just go into AT&T store and get a free sim, cost last time was USD$30 for a months usage.

  • I'm using one right now from travel sims direct right now and had no problems. fine to send texts and surf web and social media etc. also worked fine for gps

  • You don't need mobile service for GPS. You need internet to download maps but if you save the maps to your phone through your hotel's wifi then you can use GPS anywhere on those saved maps without a mobile service.

There are options for SMS and Phone calls too, don't need mobile service really unless its for business.

    • Thanks Robbie, I didnt think about this.
How can I download e.g. Oahu or Maui maps to my android phone?
      Thanks.

      • Using google maps, set desired zoom and type "OK map" in search box to save locally. For something like Oahu you will probably need to save a couple segments of the map. Zoom out to max and save, you will then be able to zoom in on the version saved to your phone.

I also use an app called CityMaps2go, not sure if that's free now but got it from an OzBargain deal and its really good too.

Enjoy, if you ride a motor bike, strongly recommend a cheap Harley rental and ride around Oahu for the day, absolutely beautiful.

        • Thank you, I will try it.

        • obbiejuve, plse would you advise how to save downloaded maps on an iphone?

        • Using google maps, set desired zoom and type "OK map" in search box to save locally.

  • Thanks for all tips guys, I appreciate it.

  • Amazon are offering CityMaps2Go Pro - Offline Map and Travel Guide for free today via this deal. Looks to be a well reviewed app for offline map usage.

  • Just wondering if you are with Vodafone Postpaid at all? I find that $5 roaming/day = $35 for your trip requires the least effort (and maybe least expensive as well?), alternatively, Vodafone/Telstra/ Optus Prepaid $30 prepaid starter pack currently being sold at Woolworths is on sale for $15 should cover you for your needs

    • Thanks, I will have a look at prepaid starter pack.
      I am with Lebara.

  • Re the prepaid starter pack, what would that cover for USA calls?

    • I've only used Telstra prepaid and the $30(half price to $15) gives you (only) 100mb of Data - which you can use VOIP/Watsapp/Messenger to make calls anywhere in the world.
I believe with vodafone you can do both.
