Advice on Best Internet Deals/Provider

Morning Ozbargainers,

Huge fan of the site and have already picked up a variety of fantastic deals considering I only landed 3 weeks ago. So much so the girlfriend has started asking me what it is I'm checking every morning first thing on my phone…….I tell her the news.

As the title suggests myself and the boss (GF) are finally moving into our new place in Sydney East and are looking for an internet provider. I find the only true way you can find out who offers the best value/service is by asking those in the know rather than relying on salespeople. We would stream a reasonable amount via apple tv and computer. Download both movies ad music but not in high volumes, and legally, of course. I would also do a bit of gaming so the ability to do that with a strong signal would be great. Our apartment has very small floor space so I'm hoping something with strong speeds, that won't break the bank is possible.

I'm really just looking for a steer in the right direction and appreciate all info provided.

Thanks,

J

many threads like this recently.. maybe some search here and whirlpool will help further.
from me, tpg. combine with your mobile plans (tpg to tpg are free).

Exetel IMO. $40 a month for me including 100 gb and line rental. They have bigger plans too. I do stream some tv shows. There is a one off setup fee but if you're moving into your own place then it is probably cheaper in the long term.

Before doing anything, go to this page and enter in your address or phone number to see what's available in your area, then you can begin working out what ISP to go with. It will list the available ISPs and the various plans they offer. It will even tell you how far away from the exchange you are and I think it even shows if you can get NBN.

  • Depending on where you are you can get decent speeds with optus but if you want to play online games without latency issues don't go with optus

    • Unless you get cable. If you get cable from Optus, by all means go for it - ping is only around 10ms!

      • cable here, but latency > 100ms at peak times D: makes for a frustrating fps experience

  • I just took TPG $49.99 ADSL2+ with homephone bundle. 50GB Peak + 50GB off Peak. That's the cheapest if you need home phone too.

10$ more would have given you unlimited ADSL2+ with homephone…

    • It's more expensive per month than Exetel. And Exetel won't divide your data into peak/off-peak.

      • yeah, $10 more expensive. But I read more bad reviews on exetel compared to TPG, so I thought it was safer to go with TPG. But who knows?

    • I've got the same plan as well. Was gonna with Exetel, but found out that they "hit" you with a up-front initial connection cost of $99. Plus read a lot of bad/negative reviews about Exetel. So decided to stay with TPG.

  • @bargainaus yeah but I don't need unlimited. that's why

  • I guess you are going to have a landline connection.

If so then check out Whirlpool.net.au as they have a section that shows you all the providers for your area. You just plug in your phone number (or if you dont have it yet, someone next door as its just giving you who services the exchange you will be on)

Go here and play away to your hearts content. That way you can decide what criteria you think is best for you and do trade-offs etc.

  • Try Spintel.

  • Many thanks for all the info guys. Gonna sit back and do all this research now. Have no need at all for a landline but I'm getting the impression it's a necessity with most high speed providers.

    Thanks again,

    J

  • Hmmmm, TPG seem to be taking a hammering online for customer service and unpredictable speeds. Anyone any experience?

Checked it out and I'm in the East exchange approx 1250m of cable length from the DSLAM. Seems so odd that it's all done on download amounts and no speeds can be guaranteed in Australia. Is that normal?

    • I've been with TPG for the last 5 years and don't have any complaints. You'll usually only hear bad things and not the good things so your experience could be wildly different. Each ISP has their own issues and TPG are only getting bigger……

Best not to ask about Internet in Australia and just accept the fact that the crap that's going on at the moment with it is stuff of IT people's nightmares and has turned very political, penny pinching and i'm guessing a bit of pandering to certain wealthy people going on. Just thinking and typing about it here makes me furious.

I'll just leave this here though FYI: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/142
