The pro is a pretty good price too. I see the 5 has been released. What advantages does the free software mentioned provide over the manufacturers one?

  • Does this work with the Dell UH2713HM? If i read correctly elsewhere, it uses a different plug or something right?

I've never owned one of these but as I do photography as a hobby this would be useful provided my monitor can use it.

It'll work - it plugs in to your USB port, so the monitor doesn't matter.

      • Fair enough, I thought the UH2713HM calibrated via the display port… might give this a go.

        Cheers

      • Certain pro monitors require particular colour meters to adjust their hardware. The Dells use XRite gear.

        • That's only if you want hardware calibration, i.e. the LUT to be written to the monitor itself. Not all Dell monitors support it.

You can definitely use software calibrators like this Spyder. The difference is, the LUT is loaded on to your video card when the computer is booted.

That said, I think pros who actually require hardware calibration wouldn't be looking at a US$59 calibrator anyway. :)

According to reviews on Amazon, the Spyder4EXPRESS only works with a single screen on a single computer.

If you have any more screens than one, you'll need the Spyder4PRO as linked in the first comment.

    • It works for multiple monitors. Just need to go through a tedious process. Disable one monitor, calibrate one, save the profile and the repeat for the other monitor.

If you have different brands'monitors don't expect them to look the same colors.

I still prefer the old types of calibrator where you adjust the setting on the monitor, not like this unit where the calibration data is a file stored in the computer.

      • Ah, so the actual adjustment is just your operating system changing the colours ?
I assumed that you'd be following instructions on the calibrator, adjusting your monitor's contrast/colour/brightness etc. to fix up the image !
So you can't use this tool for televisions, game consoles, etc.

        • Yes, the calibrated profile is saved as a file and loaded by the operating system.

        • I dunno about the current gen, but my Spyder2 has an advanced mode where you can adjust the individual RGB with your monitor's OSD, and it'll tell you how far of you are. Surely that's still possible with the new models?

It'll also create a monitor profile that is loaded at startup.

        • @eug:

          Not with Spyder4Express unfortunately.

        • @jpl: Ahh ok. I suppose you can with the Pro and Elite models.
