New Mattresses / Beds - Good value for money

Hi Guys,

Looking to replace 3 beds and wondering if anyone has any recommendations. Potentially get a King Single, Single and a double/queen

40 winks has a 40hr sale going on but was looking for your opinions on other retailers and/or online alternatives with cheap, good quality beds.

Any personal recommendations will also be much appreciated.

Thanks

  • stuff new, go gumtree. mind the stains. but you can spend the money you saved on a trip to the US.

Definitely dont wish to buy someone elses stains. I'd rather buy a really cheap new one if I had to

      • haha. Ask the seller if he can tell you where the stains are from. At least this way you wont be left wondering.
But seriously, Hope you find a good deal! I bought a $250 mattress and bed combo from harvey few years ago. Love it!

    • Mate bought a rather nice mattress on scumtree for $50 but it came with free bedbugs. It wasn't until we spent an hour or so blasting it with a stream cleaner did the bed bugs disappear.
      Definitely do not recommend secondhand.

      • But hey, Good after the spray? I suggest not to have your face down on it though.

Thankfully he is just a mate and I don't share a bed with him :)

        • @niggard: Even if you did, The floor would be cleaner!

  • Can get some decent new mattresses ($200 ballpark) from Salvos. If you want a super cheap frame, go look at IKEA or similar stores. There are a few things I find IKEA terrible for, mattresses (frames ok) are one of them. 2nd hand for frames (gumtree etc) in my opinion are also fine.

However, you spend 1/3 of your life on the mattress - not something I go super cheap on!

I find that the value sweet spot is around $500 for queen. In that case, feel free to go shopping around retailers.

  • Does anyone have thoughts about this? Considering purchasing a mattress as well.

  • Check out AMF they have good mattress for reasonable price. Been to DJ, snooze, HN and few others but AMF offered value for money

    • What is AMF? Do they have a website?

  • Avoid big name retailers as they are way overpriced. Seek smaller local furniture businesses that don't use extremely high margins then offer 40% or more discount. Queen top line mattresses should cost around $1,400. Avoid manufacturers Sealy and Sleepmaker, I have seen inside those. Perhaps go to a factory and watch a mattress being made. Avoid thick foam/rubber tops as these inevitably cave-in. Pick a mattress with moderate amounts of foam overlays and choose a mattress where the springs do the comfort work, not the foam. Consider pocket springs instead of coils as these are pre-tensioned active springs used free-form (no wire case) whereas all the others are reactionary springs, caged.
    Have fun choosing.

  • Council clean up?

  • something to consider, in some Asian countries a 2'' thick, stiff foam is the norm.

  • The mattress business is a scam because they put dozens of different names on the same product so you can't do a price comparison.

  • Zaanta is having and End of Financial Year sale right now till the end of June. While stocks last!
