Should I swap my PS4 for the Alienware ALPHA?

Hey guys!
I am just wondering what your views are on the issue PS4 Vs Alienware ALPHA.

The ALPHA seems so tempting that I have been thinking to swap my PS4 and games for it. I have done a little research on that issue on the Web but all the reviews seem a bit biased. A la the PC folk root for the ALPHA and the Console people worship the console.

Has anyone of you had the pleasure to experience both of em? What did you think?
All your advice and knowledge on this issue is welcome. Need to get this sorted.

Cheers!

The Alienware alpha is a streaming console as the ps4 is a solid well developed console. If you can afford it buy an extremely good CUSTOM built gaming pc but don't go for rubbish like the alpha.

    • Yeah, going for a custom one is the plan for the future. As I am traveling heaps at the time, I need something more compact. Thanks for the feedback bruh.

      • I'd stick with the ps4 then, or alternatively buy a decent little gaming laptop.
Note if you're traveling to america, maybe consider an ASUS G range pc, or even alienware, the prices over there are considerably cheaper and you'd just need to get a power adaptor.

  • Advice from a PC guy: You'll be disappointed by the Alpha.

Even as a member of /r/pcmasterrace , i say go with the ps4.

Plus, the alienware is a dell. That's like peeling back the bmw logo to find it's a jeep.

    • +6

And peeling the Jeep logo away to reveal it's a Great Wall.

Anyway, the allure of a gaming PC is that it's upgradable, customisable and moddable. If you are into small form factors, you can easily build a mini-ITX PC and yet still retain the ability to customise it's cooling, lighting, and swap out hardware whenever you want.

Alpha looks cool and no doubt it's pretty, but there's the double whammy of not being able to upgrade it plus it's also not cheap as it's an Dell Alienware product.

        hahahaha!

      • Naah, won't happen. Bet Great Walls now are more reliable than a Jeep :P

        • Uhhh no, they aren't. As a tradie I have many colleagues with different utes. Great Wall, stay away.

If you want a gameing pc you build it yourself not going with some alienware crap.

I don't know what Alienware Alpha is, but it's sure to have more games the Bloodborne Box, aka PS4, so you can't go wrong!

Let's look at it seriously for a second. Do you really want to add to all the people on Ozbargain that say "Yeah, but I haven't used my PS4 in a long time". You'll use it for a week then go "Oh wait, all the decent games here are already on PS3, LOL" and you won't use it. The cost of making a game on a next-gen system means it's impossible to come up with new IP's, that's why the platform houses the most remakes in any console generation to date (And it's only not even 2 years in so far!). $499 to play all the old games you likely already have. I'm not saying get the Alienware thing, but if you get a PS4, you will be disappointed.

Unless you really, really, REALLY like Bloodborne, the one decent console exclusive (Okay, and InFamous, jeez). But as someone who thought Dark Souls 2 was disappointing, I can't rightly suggest a whole system for its successor.

    • Tbf there's a lot more than Bloodborne now (which hands up, I was wrong about - it's awesome) You can't ignore all of the cross platform games just because they are available elsewhere. Driveclub is now excellent also. The guy also already owns the PS4.

    • Yeah I don't really know where you are getting your information from, could you link me some articles or information that backs up your points?

And before you hit me up with "console peasant", I own/use a gaming PC.

      Thanks.

      • About dev times and costs, Capcom frequently talk about the costs in interviews, and this is one of the articles to which I refer: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/capcom-developer-next-gen-g…

About quality console exclusives, the metacritic page seems to speak loud enough. Especially if you compare them to what a PC can play. I'd like to see a PS4 run Cities Skylines or Dwarf Fortress. http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4

Keep in mind, 5 of the 10 "Top Current Ps4 games" are remakes, and all cross platform.

And about the remakes, I admit that I may have exaggerated about the 'most remakes on any generation to date' statement; but at the way things are going, it's definitely going to happen. Resident Evil 1? Bastion? DMC? DMC though!? Nobody even liked MDC! These may all be quality games in their own right, but remakes of games I already own is a beyond crappy reason to buy a console. I can continue listing remakes if you like. When did gaming turn into rebuying and replaying our old games on new hardware, capable of so much more?

Plus if you try to tell me The Order 1886 is a good game, you are a liar. I don't need a backup source for that.

        • +1

I'm yet to play the order but I have bought it (albeit on sale half price due to mixed reviews) but I play games with some friends who both recommended it after finishing it themselves. Nothing groundbreaking but entertaining and they wanted a sequel so that was good enough for me to buy it.
So yeah, I can't vouch for it myself but you shouldn't dismiss it until you've posted it yourself either.

        • +1

Thanks - though in fairness, alot of games these days for -all- platforms are remakes.

You see it on Steam weekly that a new HD remake has been released, so I think it is kind of unfair to say it is only happening on the PS4. I don't own a PS4 but will be looking to pick one up during the mid year sales.

And you have to remember, it usually takes 2 years for a console to really start picking up in terms of game releases. Hopefully E3 shows us something new and exciting, to be honest I'm only really holding out for a Star Wars Battlefront trailer :)

..and yes, you won't hear me arguing with you about The Order, I've read alot of bad stuff about that one.

Plus if you try to tell me The Order 1886 is a good game, you are a liar. I don't need a backup source for that.

All 40 minutes it took me to complete were reasonably enjoyable

        • @Where's_That_Cake: I keep hearing that about these AAA games. "Not great, but a sequel can help it gets its bearings." Watch Dogs and Order 1886 are the ones I frequently hear it about. But you can't say that a good point about a game is that a sequel would be nice. That's like saying "My favourite thing about this patch for Minecraft is that they might make a newer patch."

Where is the Jak and Daxter? Ratchet and Clank? Sly Cooper? I'm still waiting for a Medievil reboot, which I would totally be down for. Can we stop making adult-themed games that can be completed by one-handed infants (Looking at you, Assassin's Creed) and actually match challenge to audience?

Answer: No. We can't. Because none of those things sell as well as hyping garbage.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: Like I said, I can't judge it until I play it. From what I've heard though the difference between this game receiving high and mid scores like it received was the game's length. Eleven hours is not good bang for buck for $79 (in my opinion). So if the game was longer you'd be saying it was fine right now (because you're going on review scores and here say) but why could it not be described as fine if you buy it at a discounted price?

        • @Where's_That_Cake: I just can't wrap my head around why they have all these amazing IPs that they're doing nothing with, especially when they're getting such bad reviews for everything they're trying at the moment.

        • @FrankMcFuzz:
Sorry, I edited my post, lost signal on my phone for a while. Also new IPs saved the PS3 last time around though they had screw ups like Haze at first.

        • @Where's_That_Cake: Exactly. But the PS4 is being bought by people for some unknown reason anyway so they don't need to 'save' it so they'll just release mediocre crap til someone calls them out on it.

If you heard 11 hours for the Order, then, yeah, someone is definitely lying to you. http://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=20067

I find Howlongtobeat.com is a good resource for buying games, and my playstyle fits around the "Main Story + Extras" time, 9 times out of ten. Everybody should use it before buying games with little replayability.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: 9 hours and 10+ hours for completionist isn't far from 11.

        • @Where's_That_Cake: Most people aren't completionists, and if your playstyle differs to my own then the average of Main Story is probably a better gauge. I usually wander around and try to find ALL OF THE AUDIO LOGS!!! (hate audio logs) that's why I usually trust the Main + Extras time, but if I miss one I normally don't care.

"Everything is fine and productive, my life is great. Wait. What was that noise?" - every audio log ever.

          Here's a fun one: http://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=17291

        • @FrankMcFuzz: I'm something in between main+extras and completionist. If I enjoy a game I usually get the platinum and then some if the trophies don't cover everything.

  • I own both "consoles" and I wouldn't swap one for the other. I'm amazed that I missed out on the modding scene as I was a console gamer for my whole life. But in saying that PS4/XONE are amazing in their own right. Games just work as sometimes with the alpha you have to tinker the graphical setting to get it just right.

i am interested in the alpha for its small form factor. If you game on console more than pc stick with the Playstation, if you game on pc and have a large game catalogue on steam go for the alpha.

i wouldn't look at the reasons such as evolution, hardware ect, my friends who play on console wouldn't like the alpha, because they just want to turn on the console and start playing (they have their old laptops for youtube, office and whatnot)

I play on pc, I hate gamepads, and rather mouse and keyboard, I wouldn't swap my old laptop for a PS4.

I tried the steam UI and if i had an alpha i wouldn't use it.. it's a bit laggy and awkward.
