Wayward Souls is an action-adventure game built for quick playthroughs and massive amounts of replay value. It was inspired by Spelunky, Secret of Mana, and our previous game, Mage Gauntlet.

Procedurally generated random levels mean that every time you play the game, it's a different experience. Control one of six characters, all with their own unique playstyles, abilities, and equipment. Explore and fight for survival, in combat where your tactics, positioning, and timing matter.

I bought this. Honestly, it's fairly bad. And that's after having played (and loved) the game it was based off.

The problem is that the dev's really didn't think about the combined attack types of enemies on the third (and fourth) chapters. It's impossible. Even with a heck of a lot of grinding to purchase the stat upgrades, it's still no-go. Sooner or later you will run into a randomly generated room that has a crap selection of enemies and you're just not going to recover.

It's a nasty unfair grindfest and you should spend your time elsewhere if you're looking to maximise your fun.

(and FWIW I'm not a casual gamer, I'm pretty good)

    • Just thought I'd chime in to give a different perspective! This has been one of my go-to games for more than a year. It definitely is punishingly difficult (especially in chapter 3), but to me it never felt unfair: there are some unlucky rooms with tons of nasty enemies, but you pretty much only take damage due to making mistakes.

If you like really challenging games that will punish your mistakes, this is a beautiful action RPG with a great (but steep) learning curve and a surprisingly involved story.

    • @justtoreply - I've got to agree with you. I've only made it to the boss for the second chapter and haven't got past it. It's a difficult game and some enemy combos are crazy. I've been trying to upgrade the adventurer to max and get the passive skill for all characters but I'm really getting over it.

What character do you guys think is the best to use?

The adventurer is a good choice. I got a long way with the warrior, partly because of good weapon upgrades and partly because I'm more cautious with him (I don't actually use the shield, I find the controls are occasionally unreliable - and unfortunately that's enough to end your game).

I was surprised to have some successful runs with the mage (completing chapter 2 anyway).
