Options in getting a tailored suit?

Hey
I'm quite an odd shape( tall and skinny) and i find it hard to find suits that fit me correctly. I bought one of iconic use my ING $250 card and that fits me well on my chest but a bit short on the wrists. I bought another a size larger but the chest was too big and the right on the wrists, which i returned.
I think the options for me are :
1) Getting a quote from Kelly Country and or other cheaper suit places
2) Getting a size large suit from IConic( I still have other $250 voucher left) and get altered to fit me
3) Online suit stores, where you send in your measurements and then they ship it to you
4) Going to a more premium suit shop, where i believe they would have a greater range of slim/skinny suits( not really sure of them)

Any advice is welcomed. I live in Sydney, NSW.
What prices would i be looking at?

Have you considered maybe combining a "fitted suit purchase" with a brief leisure-trip OS? Many Asian countries are cheap to get to from Strailya, and if you do your home-work you can get a brilliantly tailored/fitted suit made up for you while you're there on a brief get-away.

    • not really an option at the moment. However I thought about that

I've got a similar problem with my arm length and torso size being out of proportion for off the rack purchases.

While I think you've got a good idea with "2) Getting a size large suit from IConic( I still have other $250 voucher left) and get altered to fit me", it might also be worth going to a department store or menswear shop that sells multiple brands. I've been lucky with some helpful assistants there who've known about brands with standard fits that deviate from the norm, and they are also more likely to know if brands have cuffs that have surplus fabric that can be unstitched (which will always look better than a big one taken in).

Finally, a bespoke or a made-to-measure suit might be a bit out of your budget, but there are cheaper ends of the market. Keep an eye out for the Indochino Black Friday sale at the end of the year. They make suits in Hong Kong based on measurements you send them, and they've done my neck and wrist fit perfectly in the past. There are also a range of tailors that travel to Australia to measure, and send back after. I've never used them (have always gone to Thailand, or got shirts sent back on saved measurements, which you say isn't an option) but a friend has used this mob and been happy, and there's tons of others in the business. It isn't as cheap as going o/s for fittings, but you've said that isn't an option.

    • What are the prices ranging from in your experiences?

      • The Indochino suit cost US $374.50 when the AUD was performing better, and was purchased during their Black Friday 50% sale. From memory, I paid ~$400AUD in Baht for my last Bangkok suit, though this came with a second pair of trousers, was in 2012, and is a very rough approximation.

I haven't purchased from the Australia-visiting overseas tailor, but would guess somewhere closer to a grand a suit.

        • What do you think about the cut, quality and all that from indochino?
All those MTM suits seem to have a number of mixed reviews online.

        • I was happy with the cut and quality of my Indochino suit, especially given it was made without an in-person tailor visit. There is definitely a price premium on this service relative to purchasing direct from South East Asia. I'm not sure I would have been as satisfied if I paid their usual retail price, but with the 50% off sale I thought it was very good value for the quality/style/fit.

  • THeres a bespoke tailor at the Hilton hotel city, but i cant remember the name, havnt tried them out myself but from memory they have decent prices ~500$ for a full suit from memory

  • Give Jack London a try, they make suits for the tall and slim build.
