    so over-priced

    • +6

All flagship phones have gone up this year thanks to the falling AUD, unfortunately.

For some reason HTC decided to price their M9 at $100 more than the S6. Fortunately stores don't follow their RRP!

      • +10

Fortunately the M9 sucks anyway so it doesn't really matter for most people:p

        • -3

I'll wait till they fix the camera issue (software related on the HTC as its the same camera on the sony phones) and no matter what sammy does to pretty up their phone they cant hide the rubbish touch wiz interface, having a M7 im glad they've (HTC) not changed the phone dramatically the build quality is fantastic and HTC Sense is a step above any others i've used (LG, Sammy, iPhone, windows phone) … :)

          each to their own.. :)

          @scud70:
It actually uses a Toshiba sensor unlike most other phones which use a Sony sensor. Or am I mistaken?

        • Compared to LG G4 / Xperia Z3?
Think their M7 is good though.

Just paid for this with Officeworks, they price beat and delivered, $1,110.55 - I get it on Monday :)

I tried one in store today, man they're great. But this price is insane for 32GB.

    • +6

Well … last year's S5 was $888 for a 16GB model. And the AUD was 19% higher to the USD back then. These high prices are here to stay, unfortunately!

      • +1

That's true, that was purely outrageous. This phone at least has a premium charm to it

    • -1

Jeez if this is so pricey, I don't want to imagine how much crapple would be asking for their iCrap

      • They actually have the same RRP prices. The difference is that for the same RRP price you get 32GB with the S6 but only 16GB with the iPhone.

  • This is a dupe of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/189803
    You just listed the S6's

    • Did you miss the first line of the post?

      • -4

        No.. not at all..

All I am saying is we dont need a new post for every product samsung sell.

        • +1

You must have missed the recent ebay and Masters deals then!

Anyway the OzB posting guidelines allow for multiple bargains from the same site if it's a good deal.
I think this is a good deal for local stock, although it's expensive for a phone .

        • -5

          @eug:

Why must you continuously accuse me of missing things?

Ebay and Masters sell more than just phones and phone accessories

        • @Roary: I think you're … missing the point. :)

  • +15

What is the benefit of buying Samsung now given that you can no longer replace the battery or add a memory card? Seems they are moving a step closer to cloning Apple phones…

    • +4

      Android?

      • +10

ahhh yes. but there are now many other good phones on the market that use android

        • None of them are as good, or similar priced, like the HTC One M9.

        • +2

          @nic1:

… You mean like the s6?

The m9 is way too overpriced for what you get. Similar software as last year's, very similar hardware, rubbish camera compared to even last year's Galaxy s5. (Check out phone arenas camera blind tests, the photos taken on the m9 are miserably in last place.

      Samsung Galaxy S6
      - World's first 14 nm 64 bit Samsung Exynos mobile processor. Intel is the only other semiconductor company to achieve this manufacturing process. Expect 20%+ performance over old mobile processors.
      - 1440p resolution screen
      - Memory and storage is solely on the PCB now, so expect extremely high bus speeds from the flash memory.
      - World's first phone with DDR4 RAM. I think they use their own manufactured mobile memory.
      - The best smartphone cameras at the moment. So much better than the HTC M9 and Lumia 930.
      - Samsung pay is better then all other pay systems. You can use it almost anywhere as opposed that shitty APple Pay.
      - World's first double edge display. It's an excellent innovative feature.
      - ~115GB Cloud Storage from Microsoft One Drive courtesy of Samsung.

Apple weren't the first to not include SD Cards or removable batteries. SD Card storage is slow, go carry a round a Sandisk Cruzer Fit USB drive if you need more storage. They're the size of your thumb's nail. Buy a power brick if you need more juice in your phone.
In summary, it's the best smartphone on the market and even the APple Iphone 7 probably won't beat this phone's hardware specs. APple are always a generation or two behind in hardware.
It is the best and most innovative smartphone in the market at the moment.

      • +8

Its not about the specs. Its more about the user experience. How efficiently and smoothly it performs with its OS. Same with the camera. Its not about the number of megapixels but more about the quality of the photos taken.

        • +11

better hardware specs do not necessarily translate to better performance. also depends on the software and OS - if its coded inefficiently then it will take longer to perform tasks regardless of the hardware specs.

        • +10

I would argue ppl buy Apple simply because it's an Apple.

          There's no rhyme nor reason.

        • +5

@tendollar: That's by far the most obnoxious comment I have come across in recent times!
By that same argument, please explain how most iPhones with just 1 GB of RAM are able to handle graphically intensive games/applications that require high-end hardware specs in an Android device?
And just to make it clear, I've never owned an Apple device. Have never been a fan of their jailed ecosystem, but am a 'computer enthusiast' who appreciates technology nevertheless, regardless of the brand!

        • +4

True, but from reviews the S6 has one of the best cameras on any android smartphone.

        • -1

@burningrage: People buy Apple mainly because they are reliable. I get sick of people judging other phone makers when this is clearly a post for a Samsung phone.

        • @Ryder - Phones need to be unique as people are because everyone has different requirements. As far as the camera is concerned, the megapixels DO count for modern photography (not just a "myth" anymore especially with higher resolution screens). People crop and becomes a digital zoom that is still acceptable without requiring bulky optical lens. Larger and better CMOS sensors (like the SONY CMOS ones) do produce less noise with more colour range and vibrancy.

        • +1

          @ShamelessBargains:

A quick search on many forums will argue otherwise.

From my own experience, many of my MP4s don't even play. FLACs not recognized (maybe this has changed I don't know but it didn't even show on my Iphone 4). These are to name a few.

Yes, the interface makes it easy but reliability is one exact reason why I will NEVER come back to Apple.

Not one people (my brother included) I met said they bought Apple because it's reliable, they said they bought it because they like/use Mac and it's natural therefore to buy Iphone.

        • True, but go play with the s6 in stores.

… Faster than my Nexus 5. Yes, I'm talking about the general use, including Touch Wiz.

Recent apps? Bam. Camera, from standby or whatever? Bam. Gallery? Kids play…

Seriously impressed… But too expensive for me.

          Obnoxious comment —> Ozbargaine'd

        • @Ryder:

Thats true but at the end of the day it is people that code software and make it more efficient, not a company.

And people can be bought and sold like office furniture. So Any company can make there product more efficient if they wave enough money around. Last i checked both Apple and Samsung have lots of that stuff so I'm sure they wont have a problem with poor efficiency.

        • -1

          @imcold:

The a8 SoC offers better per a core performance than Android alternatives. Most app's /games at best only use 2 cores. The clock speed specs are misleading since they use different architectures, just because one is higher doesn't mean it's faster. iOS can get away with less ram because it's better optimised and it's easier for developers to optimise their games and apps for a few devices as opposed to hundreds on android. And finally the iPhone's use lower res screens which helps with performance also.

        • +1

          @Ronnnie:

The iPhone can get away with less ram because it has less features such as multi-tasking. The SG6 can run two apps at the same time. Stock Android can do it too but the apps needs to be specifically designed and compiled for multitasking.

        • @imcold:

Yeah I'm aware that Samsung have a few gimmick features that other phones don't have such as multiwindow. What always annoyed me with Android that despite the phones having huge amount of ram they still needed to reload apps running in the background. While the iPhone on the other hand with it limited amount of ram can still reopen the apps without reloading. Tests like this show how much faster the iPhone is at reopening apps, and also highlight how poor tw is compared to sense from htc.

          http://youtu.be/nCln9_mgZJo

I know things have changed but it never should have been the case in the first place.

I used the new S6 today and it's very smooth, it's nice to see Samsung actually finally have made a device that runs android just as well as their competitors.

      • +10

Ryder is right. The reason Apple can get away with being one or two generations "behind" with respect to technical specifications is because the software is customised for the hardware which makes it run smoother than the non-hardware customised Android OS.

But either way, it's pointless to argue over Apple vs Samsung. Just buy the phone that does what you want!

        • -5

          One or two generations behind?

They use less RAM, that's it. The SoC is a beast, that's why it runs smooth, it's fast as f**k. Yes, it only has 2 cores, but so does an i7 Haswell-U….

        • @TheContact:
OS Optimisations help with the benchmarks. Apple has spent a bit of time optimising 64bit whereas Android is pretty new to 64bit.

        • Apple are usually in front on their mobile chips though.

      • +1

form S2-S5…i always found the phone get slower and slower the longer you used it..even after resetting etc..just not sure why..

        • World's first 14 nm 64 bit Samsung Exynos mobile processor. Intel is the only other semiconductor company to achieve this manufacturing process. Expect 20%+ performance over old mobile processors.

The number of nm its chip is will be imperceptible to me. Same with 64 bit. This is something you boast about as a bullet point for bragging rights, but it's performance increase is no different from every other annual update of a SOC.

Expect 20%+ performance over old mobile processors.

News flash, this happens every year, with every manufacturer. The new model is a bit faster than last year's model? No way!

        • World's first phone with DDR4 RAM. I think they use their own manufactured mobile memory.

Similar to the 14 nm, the lay person like myself is not going to notice the difference between DDR4, DDR5, DDR7. Only someone benchmarking will be able to tell what memory it is. Who manufactures it is also irrelevant.

        • 1440p resolution screen

Not even close to being the first phone to do it.

        • The best smartphone cameras at the moment. So much better than the HTC M9 and Lumia 930.

When quality matters, I'm not going to be shooting with my camera. My phone snaps are for random things that I didn't expect to need to be taking a photo of. Such as license plates, signs, lists, etc. I won't be using it on a graduation ceremony or wedding.

It is the best and most innovative smartphone in the market at the moment.

Innovative, what? The specs have increased. That's not innovating. Innovating means doing something new, not doing what someone else has done but better.

        • Memory and storage is solely on the PCB now, so expect extremely high bus speeds from the flash memory.

I don't need extremely high bus speeds on my media. I can play videos and music faster.. what? For every day use, imperceptible.

Not worth the tradeoff of upgradeable memory. If I want more, I have to pay the extortionate costs the manufacturers charge for on board memory. And it's never upgradeable. So if you think 32GB will be fine, then later you find out it's not enough after all, too bad.

SD Card storage is slow, go carry a round a Sandisk Cruzer Fit USB drive if you need more storage.

Even if that were true, which it isn't, I'd rather have the option to use it if I want to. A class 10 SD card is plenty fast enough for me. I'm not going to be running benchmarks on it. Sandisk Cruzer Fit is a piece of garbage USB drive, and you were disingenuous in picking that unit as the one to compare it to. Why not compare it to something real world, such as a Samsung PRO MicroSD card? 90MB/s read, 80MB/s write. Inexpensive for 64GB (I bought from Amazon for $35). More than fast enough. Now how much does Samsung charge for an extra 64GB internal storage? What are its read and write speeds?

Buy a power brick if you need more juice in your phone.

Yes, because I'm going to carry one of these everywhere I go right? Running out of juice isn't the reason I want a removable battery. I'm not going to swap it out. The reason I want it removable is because when the battery inevitably shits the bed, I don't have to pay the manufacturer $80-100 like iPhone users do. I can buy a $10-15 genuine battery on ebay and replace it myself, saving me a lot of money.

What do I get for these tradeoffs? They made a phone cased in metal now, and even thinner than before (I had no complaints with the previous thickness). As a bonus, now it bends easier. Samsung won't be able to get cheeky at Apple anymore with their "bend to greatness" ads. And they get to charge more for it.

        • -1

Well said, so really it's just an evolutionary update like most smartphones. I think the high price points are going to be the killer along with no expandable storage..

        • +1

          @ShamelessBargains:

It's an evolutionary update, sure, but that doesn't mean it's not significant. Literally every aspect of the phone is bleeding edge tech and is better than any of the competition could muster for this generation, it's not just a par-for-the-course upgrade, don't let lostn's dismissal deter you.

        • +2

Innovative, what? The specs have increased.

You do realise that actual technological progress has been made to increase these specs, right? They don't just snap their fingers and have a marginal increase in specs. It isn't like they just clocked last year's CPU and GPU a couple hundred MHz faster and called it a day. They produce all these components themselves, and all these components go above and beyond the competition. It's not just a par-for-the-course upgrade, and I'm sick of people downplaying the positives in hardware progression because they're pissy about the removable storage and battery.

        • +2

When quality matters, I'm not going to be shooting with my camera.

True. But I don't carry my camera everywhere.
I only use my phone camera for casual shots, but I want those casual shots to look decent. The HTC One M8 was close - I don't mind the low resolution as they're just fun shots. The fast speed was absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately the lack of OIS and very poor dynamic range didn't fully satisfy me. HDR didn't look great. The S6 camera looks like it fixes all those problems so far.

I don't need extremely high bus speeds on my media. I can play videos and music faster.. what? For every day use, imperceptible.

The faster storage was a big feature for me. You're completely forgetting that the OS also runs on that same fast storage. Running an OS on slow eMMC storage results in pauses when there's high disk I/O - I'm sure we've all experienced phones that lag during some operations, like after taking a photo, or installing/updating apps.

So if you think 32GB will be fine, then later you find out it's not enough after all, too bad.

As I've mentioned before, it totally depends on the user. I think it's safe to assume that the vast majority of the S6-buying public would be nontechnical people who don't know about FLAC files, don't have a library of Bluray rips, or care about recording in 4K. For them, even 32GB would be perfectly suitable.

Back when 16GB phones were the standard, I found microSD slots very, very important - I would never buy a phone without one. But now that 32GB is standard and 64GB costs "a bit more", I find that I'm totally satisfied with 64GB.

As a bonus, now it bends easier.

Looking at the bend tests, the regular S6 definitely does not look easy to bend. Nowhere as easy as the iP6+. Plastic phones bend even more.

        • First of all, no one cares what YOU need. Every single specification was an improvement over last generation's model. What do you exactly want then? A removable battery? Oh please stop flogging a dead horse. It seems like you have just disregarded every single leap Samsung has taken and insulted their product at every turn. It's clear to me you have no clue how a phone operates, the manufacturing skills and processes required to produce something like this and the sheer amount of research that goes into making processors operate faster and smarter.
          All talk, no substance.
Sandisk Cruzer Fit is an excellent USB drive for the price. Go read the reviews on it.

Samsung knows that the average user only user only uses between 20 - 30GB of internal storage, so there isn't much point in catering for someone who stores 1080p porn videos on his phone. Also Android Kit Kat caused problems with SD Card functionality (look it up) in phones, so a lot of people weren't even using an SD card during that long period. Maybe you should just get a tablet since you think a phone should behave more like a tablet/alptop than a mobile.
THere is so much more wrong with your comments, but I honestly can't be bothered going through each mistake.
P.S. I never said that the S6 is the first phone with a 1440p screen, but it's a pretty important feature to mention. There is an official Samsung video on youtube of the S6 undergoing load testing. Please watch it before you pedal nonsense.

    • Totally agree.

    • Their note series is still the best imo if you're comfortable with the size. Samsung actually knows how to utilise the big screen with a taskbar and floating windows and a pen.

      • The note 4 is good, but still has too much lag. I hope the s6 is a significant improvement. I can understand why people who come from iPhone to Samsung criticise android. Touchwiz is also less stable than other alternatives.

        • Really I don't notice the lag whatsoever. However I don't use TouchWiz so that might be why.

Noticed it on my Note 2 though.

        • @jlogic:

Yeah I don't want to risk warranty. TouchWiz is really horrible, there's no excuse for lag in this day and age.

        • @Ronnnie:

You don't need to risk warranty to avoid TouchWiz. It is just the launcher.

          Try NovaLauncher (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoils…) instead.

        • @lethological: Yeps that is the one I use. Awesome launcher small and slick.

  • I tried to get a 128gb white one. I had it pre-ordered at Telstra. Yesterday I went in to make sure they would have stock today for the launch. No luck. They didnt get any 128gb versions. I called Telstra to see where the nearest shop is that will have one. No luck. No Telstra store was going to have any stock of the 128gb version. I then called Samsung and was advised that the one I wanted (white 128gb standard S6) no one has because they (Samsung) didn't even have any. I could get the black version but you have to buy it outright as no providers were receiving any stock of 128gb versions. Pretty bad. I was looking forward to getting that phone today.

    • +1

Out of curiosity, what do you need 128GB of storage for? I couldn't imagine needing more than 32GB, even with a huge music collection.

      • +1

        only 23GB usable.
HD Videos, HQ music will take quite a bit of space

        • +1

While I agree that 32gb is too small and that 64gb should be the minimum supplied (especially with no SD Card). I don't see how the 64gb isn't enough, I understand that with 32gb you'd be pushing it after installing apps and music. I have a 64gb Oneplus one and I've got something like 50+gbs free (with apps, music and season 5 of Stargate Atlantis on it) but I guess that my usage of my phone is extremely different from the next person usage.

        • As well as heaps of games and apps, kindle books, etc…

I understand that some people will/would be more than happy with just 16 or 32GB, but at least give other people the option than just having 1 or 2 storage options (16/32).

@Annoying Source, I agree with what you said, and it does depend on how/what one's usage would be.
By the the way, are you still happy with your 1+1?, have you had any issues with it?
Any other comments on this phone?

As spawnpoint said, usable storage of 23-25GB on a 32GB phone is not much for some people, like me.

        • +1

          @Annoying Source:

If you use Tidal, Deezer or manual methods, it's pretty easy to fill 128GB with FLACs. I'm looking at a 128GB, but might wait for the price to drop in a few months and get one outright. Gotta love these early adopters who subsidize my phone purchases lol, shame it doesn't work with iPhones…

        • @mostlygordon: Fair enough but I feel as tho if you are really into music like that then maybe having a dedicated media player would be a better option. For average people 64gb is enough as 320kb music files doesn't take up all that much room and give decent quality (at least to my untrained ears)

        • +1

@OrbDaggerZ: I love my Oneplus One, I was considering getting the S6 on Vodafone with 6 or 7gb data but I have no reason to upgrade as the One does everything so well.

I can have a full day of usage and still have 60% battery left (this includes texting a lot and listen to music for a decent amount of time)

Originally I was having touch screen problems and I had this issue where this weird bubble thing appeared on the screen - It seem to be a separation of two parts of the screen (it first appeared after I dropped it). Slowly it spread from the top left corner across to the front facing camera (not on the display so it didn't bother me) but as it slowly spread my touch screen issues got worse to the point where I couldn't use the phone.

Fortunately I bought it from DWI eBay and they covered the warranty, I now have the phone back (about 2 weeks now) and I am still in love, it is just a great phone

Is your Atlantis at 1080p or some divx dvd rip? The size difference is huge.

        • @lostn: I just checked it's not 1080p but I believe it is 720p, either way it alone takes up 8gbs and the quality is fine for my computer screen and looks even better on my Onepluse One

Hi, I want the large space because I do have lots of videos on my phone. I do not wish to stream them all of the time and use up the data when I don't need to. I also have lots of music. At the moment I have an S4 with a 64gb additional memory card. I would prefer the 128 so I dont get caught needing more space when there is no memory slot for added memory. Plus if I go on a plan its only an extra $5 a month for the 128gb over the 64gb version.

      • You're not a power user or professional. A lot of my custom software is quite large. Not to mention I record a butt load of photos and videos.

      • 64gb is enough for non SDcard phone. Samsung is yet again doing the same scheme with built-in memory 32gb like Apple 16GB iPhone 6

        • I'm perfectly fine with my 32 gig nexus 5.

It's all about backing up your photos and videos each month, if you're paranoid.

        • @inose: Surely we're all taking advantage of Google+'s free automatic cloud backup for our photos and videos by now?

          @eug:

um… no? My photos stay with me.

@inose: Ok, then you should look into an app like FolderSync. It'll let you auto-backup any folder to your computer or NAS.

        • @eug:

          Thanks for the info!

4k recording takes about 60mb/10 seconds if you're into that kind of thing. FLACS, tv shows/movies for the train

  • Finally someone other than One Plus One or apple (I think that's all?) releasing a phone with 64GB/128Gb options.
IMHO its crazy/stupid paying $500+ for any phone still running with 16GB or 32GB in this day and age, surely I'm not the only one to think this.

I would go a 1+1, but its too big for what I want & a pain to get one.
I would prefer something the size of Sony's Z1/Z3 compact, with a mSD slot and w/proof and with a good camera.

    Thanks any way OP.

@oison, thats sucks that you cant get the size/color you wanted atm (?).

It's crazy buying a phone without an sd card. Period. 128gb micro sd's are less than $1/gig now and if you need more go buy a full size sd card, strip it off it's shell and use a micro sd ribbon for 256gb of goodness. Still would cost less than a 128gb version.

      • It really depends on the person. Many of my friends don't even fill up their 32GB phones. All they use it for is to surf the net, use a few apps, take photos, and listen to music. 32GB is plenty for that.

      • We were fine back in the days when it was only Samsung that offered sd card expansion.

I'd still be fine, even with 16 gigs. It's all about backing up your stuff each month.

  • guys which should i get?

this deal and stay on my $30 a month prepaid with telstra
    $900+$720($30 a month x 24 months)=$1620
benefits, its telstra so better reception, and prepaid means im not locked in to a contract.
cons: no unlimited calls and only 1.3 gb data

    OR

go on the optus plan which totals to $1484,
    $66x24months-$100visa card=$1484
benefits: its cheaper, unlimited calls and text, 3gb data
cons, locked in for 24 motnhs , and reception not as good as telstra

edit: forget it, the black 32gb regular s6 is not even on samsung site, probably sold out

    • Link for the Optus plan? Cheapest I can see is $76 per month for the 3gb of data and unlimited calls and text. Pretty good buying even at $76 with the 6 months of Netflix and $100 gift card.

Depends whether you want the freedom of a byo or locked into a carrier for 2 years. I would consider the 64gb model for future proofing as its soooo easy to fill up storage space with games, movies and apps!

      • you get 10 dollars off if you have optus broadband, which i do
        plus $100 visa card
all up its $1484 for 24 months, best deal around.
even if you dont have optus broadband its still cheaper than any other telco

        • That's a great deal then. I highly recommend the plan. After phone repayments, you are looking at about $20 per month which is great value for 3gb and unlimited everything. Just make sure that Optus coverage is good in your area.

        • @ShamelessBargains: yeh it should be, I really thought about getting it outright today and staying on my prepaid, but the deal was too good to pass.

        • @striker5950: I agree. You also have the piece of mind warranty with Optus for 2 years if something goes wrong. I have been with Optus for a few months now and their customer service has been great.

        • @ShamelessBargains:thats good to hear, hopefully their reception will be great too. im not expecting it to match telstra but if its %70 percent as good than I can live with that :)

    • Is that $100 visa card from the Optus student offer?

  • The S6 64gb is only $1008 outright from Virgin.

    • you have to go on a contract and cancel though? AFAIK you can't claim for TRS.

  • Anyone got luck with the cash rewards yet?

    • Cashrewards can take up to a few days to come through

    • Hi There, Andrew from CashRewards just checking, did you receive your cashback on this yet, if you bought something and didn't receive a cashback notification email, PM me your cashrewards user/email and we'll look into it?

      • Hi Andrew, I'm just wondering why I have only ever received chashback for my ebay.co.au purchases that I did through CashRewards but not the online purchases from other stores also through CashRewards (eg. "livingsocial", "DanMurphy's", "The Iconic", "asos", "Coles", "Woolworths", "CameraParadise")?
