Is 2007 Holden Commodore VE Too Old? and Just go with 2009?

Hey guys i'm between a hard decision of looks or function??? (sorry)
Need help from Holden experts here :D :D

So I'm leaning towards getting a 2007 Holden Commodore VE Omega with the spoiler and towbar.
this:
http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Holden-Commodore-2…

But is 2007 too old?

or should I get the more recent one, I'm not to keen on this one, but its newer.
this:
http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Holden-Commodore-2…

Is there any reason I should get the 2009 than the 2007, was there any significant changed on the model line?

thanks!

  • i wouldn't think there'd be a huge difference. Newer doesn't necessarily mean better— it'll come down to how the car's been treated. My parents have the 2008 model of the above and mum would prefer driving their '98 VT (which has recently ticked over 500,000 on the odometer).

  • +2

Personally if I were buying a Commodore I would look for later 6 speed auto models

    • +1

You're correct, the VEII is much improved. I would spring forward to that or spring back to the last-of-range and well perfected VZ.

I've owned VY, VZ, VE and VE II

  • +13

No difference, only difference happened in 2nd half of 2010 with the Series 2. These get a better stereo system with better Bluetooth functionality, USB, and dual-zone climate control. If you can find 1 of these at a reasonable price, you'll be happier in the long run.

    (Holden salesman here :P)

Hi, poor mechanical skill here - but didn't some of the V6 commodores of 06/07 have problems with their timing chains?

    http://www.carsguide.com.au/car-advice/q-and-a/holden-commod… and

    http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/ve-holden-commodore-2006…

    • Those seem to be the 3.6 SV6s (OP looking at the 3.0 Omega), and looks like anyone that had issues realised it under warranty. I wouldnt think it's much to worry about by now.

      • theyre both 3.6 V6 :p
but theres warranty in the cars. so yea

        • Sorry, I'm wrong lol prior to 2010 they were 3.6 yes, 2010 onwards they're 3.0

        • @Spackbace:

its saying 3.6 on the page

        • @jomari29:
Yep just fixed my research lol see above

        • +3

Dealer warranty is a load of bull. Go read some reviews on the warranty and their scams.

        • +2

          @zeomega:

It's better than zero warranty. Sure it's limited and not bumper to bumper, but there is at least still some stuff covered, and at no extra cost to the buyer

    • +1

      very salesman like optimistic.

Lol yes this is true, and despite the brand I specialise in it's always interesting hearing the difference between a salesman (who drives all the cars, sees resale values, and generally knows what they like vs dont like) vs mechanic (who fixes all the cars, sees the major faults and sees maintenance costs). No different to people researching online and finding 5-10 owners complaining about a fault that 10s of 1000s of people don't get.

I generally try not to bias my car opinions (feel free to check past comments) and will happily recommend the Suzuki Swift to whoever wants to listen to me!

I've recommended the OP look at the Series 2 as for a first car it offers more in terms of long-term comfort and the 6-speed gearbox. Plus anything under 180,000kms to get the statutory warranty (which isn't a lot, but at least it's a bit of piece of mind against anything major over the next month-3 months).

        • Tell me, in relation to the Suzuki swift, Do you find many of these suffering electrical gremlins?

Haven't heard of anything major. I work at a Holden/Suzuki dealership, and the Warranty Clerk doesn't have to deal with anything major with the Suzukis.

Stat warranty in WA seems pretty generous with coverage up to 180K.
Whats the limitations? Under 10 years and excludes all commercial vehicles?

          Yeah pretty much! Up to 150,000kms gets 3 months/5000km warranty, 150-180,000kms gets 1 month/3000km.

And has to have more than 2 seats etc etc ;)

Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge - I've heard there's a bit of money in those, personally I hate driving them! I'm 6'3 and there's zero room for my left foot in any that I've driven! Nice to look at, shit to drive imo

          @Cheap Charlie:

You sound like the salesman who sold me a Dodge Nitro in 2008 at York!

        • @Cheap Charlie:

Fantastic vehicle, contrary to the CJD "crap" people think hasn't missed a beat!

  • +2

I would go for a MY10 minimum. These are still series 1 and were available from September 2009 and (unless it's on LPG) have the six-speed auto mated to the 3.0 L or a 3.6, which is much improved over the older 3.6 available up until MY9.5.

I've owned my MY10 Omega (3.0) for 3 years now and it is still a fantastic car. It hasn't missed a beat despite being ex-police. The earlier ones were noisier, clunkier (gearbox), thirstier and not as well-appointed. Not that the Omega is luxurious though!

My wife drives it mostly, and primarily around town. She still manages to get less than 10L/100km out of it, and on a trip with us both and out three young children it is usual to get around 7.5 L/100km.

    Hope this helps.

  • 2007 one has done 30,000 kms less so is the better choice but like others have said if you can find a 2010 one….

I did for the same price in WA and it has 135815Kms

    how about this?
what you guys think, seems perfect description what everyone is suggesting and under 10k

    http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Holden-Commodore-2…

      • dont have money yet, NAB taking its sweet time dealing with documents… :(

        • I wish… maybe when I get a better job.

        • Sign up subject to finance. Don't need to have the money in your hand to take the car off the market :)

        • +10

My suggestion is not to get into debt so quickly. Buy with what money you have first rather than taking out a loan to get a "nice" car. And for your own sake factor in a 3rd party insurance too. I had someone without insurance rear end me and total my car, i suspect he's still paying it off a year+ later.

        • +2

          @zeomega:

Finance requires the vehicle to be comprehensively insured, just FYI ;)

        • @Spackbace:

Regardless of if he's forced or not. In the event he does buy a car with whatever money he has, he should factor in cost of 3rd party.

Paying 100k for totaling someone else's car vs less than a thousand a year to not need to. I know which one most.. if not all people will rather take.

        • @zeomega:
Get down off your soapbox, that was unnecessary, as I said, unless he takes an unsecured loan, under car finance it will have to have comprehensive insurance. End. Of. Story.

    • Wait thats the one I found lol

  • +1

All I can say is I cannot wait to change cars. I bought a 07 sv6 and was happy with the car itself but the douchebags on the road will piss you off! Every damn traffic light some fool revs their engine wanting to race, And their bogan gf's yelling out their window asking to drag. Not sure if you're a p plater or not, but youll get pulled over every 30minutes. If i was you, Get a golf buggy.

    • Or get an Aurion and never get challenged. And if you do you can always beat a non v8 or non turbo commodore.

    • haha..

I got less than a month left on my Ls…
Im not that kind of person that breaks rules… :)

      • +1

haha, Good luck for your P's.
But seriously, The amount of people that think there cool trying to race a commodore is crazy! Ill pray for you ;).
However seems i got skimped, Trading my VE in a few weeks and they offered me $6.5k with 130k's. Defiantly should of sold it privately.

        • Defiantly should of sold it privately.

    • Have a VY commodore wagon and this has only happened once. Maybe the wagons don't get the bogans going?

Before you buy from a dealer, consider getting one at your local pickles AUCTION (not the BINP). It may save you a few grand.. or a newer car at the same money. Where do you think the dealers get some of their cheap stock from? get the mobile app and bid on the go if you cant attend on site.

    http://www.pickles.com.au/cars/-/listing/searchItems?fromCon…

      • Just buy from government auctions and you know its not from a dodgy dealer

        • Where are these "government auctions" you speak of? Any links? Thanks :)

    • -1

Gee thanks for the Neg, this comment was for my previous comments…

  • Around a similar price point and kms; You are better off finding a VE Calais which will come with a 5 speed auto and better interior rather than the clunky 4 speed and pov interior in the entry model commodore. eg http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Holden-Calais-200…
and no one will want to race you

  • I wouldn't consider a 3.0L Commodore fleet car with a tow bar. Is there a trans oil cooler?

  • I wouldn't get either of them, so boring, get Japanese cars, you just can't go wrong with them, I have a brand new 2015 Subaru WRX, AWD and Turbo, love it :)

    • +8

where did you pick this wrx up for $10K?? that's the OP's budget..

      • -2

2002 - 2005 WRX with low kms, here you go :)
        I sold my one owner 2001 WRX with 120,000km for $11,000 in 2013 :)

        • +9

13 year old wrx? no, no, no…. where can I get a 2015 wrx for $10K?

Lol spoken like someone who needs to show off his possessions in order to put value on his life. From only a handful of comments on these forums, all you've done is boast about your possessions.

All I can assume is :
      A) you're a small man, or
      B) you have a small…
(or maybe both a and b)

Either way, the 2015 Wrx looks like it gotten beaten up by the ugly stick, then remade, then beaten up again just for good measure.

      • -7

Please don't get jealous just because you can't afford one, Thanks :)

        • I have a brand new 2015 Subaru WRX, AWD and Turbo, love it :)

I have a brand new 2016 Subaru wrx as well. I love it too;)

        • -2

You obviously don't know what car salesmen drive ;) and we don't have to deal with the asset depreciating :)

ms "I have a brand new 2016 Subaru wrx as well. I love it too;)"

Congratulations ! But I think your car is 1996 Subaru Impeza WRX ? lol

        • +1

Please don't get jealous just because you can't afford one, Thanks :)

I know you're a proud owner of a brand spankin new WRX, but claiming people can't afford them when you don't know the person on the opposite side of the screen is just laughable.

There are people on OZB, and thanks to OZB helping us save money, can afford one or a few STIs outright (read:- NO LOAN) without having to break a sweat. Do consider that possibility before making statements like that above. Not everyone wants/likes a WRX, I personally won't touch/want a one, different strokes for different folks.

Which brings me back to your original statement.

I wouldn't get either of them, so boring

WRXs are boring IMHO. How often do you see a WRX vs a 911 turbo, M1/3/5, GTR, Ferarri, Lambo, R8 etc? My idea of owning something exciting is different from yours.

        • +1

          @Marcsie:
I think we are talking about real cars here. Not the one that you get from big w for $2.

Next time ask your mum how much does a real wrx cost.

        • I'm sure you're very proud of your car and good for you. Just a bit off topic.

A new WRX isn't really something that would impress anyone I know. It might seem exotic to a 15 year old school boy though.

Sorry, I didn't know that you really owned one, coz you said 2016 model, I thought you tried to be funny :)

    hey hey guys, just update,
(I know you guys will be annoyed?)
    Im going Ford…

I decided not to go with Holden as the dealers where I was gonna get them from has bad reviews about dodgy temporary repairs and no warranties

    http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Ford-Falcon-2009/A…

    • A high mileage Omega was always going to be from a wholesaler, and there are good and bad ones, would've been worth at least looking at a couple of the ones previously mentioned.

The Falcons drive well, but it will be thirstier and doesn't have some of the modern features the Omega has (Bluetooth, usb etc)

      • +2

the remaining Holden's that I got looks like blank slates, looks generic, the ford just looks better imo
under the hood, it doesnt matter…
Not biased with Holden or Ford as I haven't drove both and hadn't owned both.. yet

        • Nice, Good luck with the purchase!

      • Fly like a G6 ………

      • not at all. as I wont be driving much yet…
        maybe 20km a week…

      • -2

I totally agree with you, stay away from Ford and Holden if possible, go Japanese cars :)

    • +2

good choice…. having owned both ve and fg. ford is much better and more reliable vehicle… torque output is much much higher and fuel consumption is very similar… stay away from 3l VE as they are lazy and guttless …go with camry is you dont care about engine power or horrible interior or handling….as they are reliable fridges on wheels

  • As someone who has owned a few Commodores, my only advice is that they tend to fall apart as they age - my vote would be for a newer model based on my historical experience (although my last Commodore was a VY so their "fall apart-ed-ness may have changed with the VE series)

  • +1

Look up A pillar issue on these cars. I had this car and sold it because of it.
    http://m.motoring.com.au/news/2007/large-passenger/holden/co…

  • +1

Here's my advice. If you are the sort of person who can look after a car and isn't going to trash it then get a loan and spend more. Probably 15k is going to be a good point to buy a car. Spend less and you will probably pay the difference in repairs. Spend more and you get hit with greater devaluation. This is advice from the racv.

    • +1

      @MikeKulls

      Good advice :)

    • or buy the 15k car, and still need money spent on it anyway. Not even a new car your guaranteed a fault free ownership

  • Dont know if its been mentioned but if you have 18" rims then imo a set of decent tyres could set you back ~$1k when needed (~$750 of they have a buy 3 get 4 deal at the time).

  • If you are young dumb and full of something, get a cheap ass car for your first 2-3. You are probably going to bang it at some point, might as well be a heap when you do.

  • You are probably going to bang it at some point

Better get some injury cover or life insurance so that you are not a burden on the tax payer.

    • I have medicare and BUPA covers. Will get comprehensive Insurance too :)
One thing I hate most is wasting our taxes to lazy low life who depend on it to live but have no disabilities… :D
