MEL -> LAX in December, best time to buy a flight

Hi all,

I usually go to LA in February or March every year, with the exception of 2015.

This time around I'm going around the week of Christmas and returning the first week of January 2016.
Sadly, I have a hunch that there wont be many sub $1,000 flights.

Any experiences or tips of buying cheap flights for that travel period from Melbourne to LA?
Ideally wanting Qantas, Virgin, Delta, American or United flights that arrive at LAX in the early morning like 6:30am

Air New Zealand is out of the question as their 10:30AM arrival is too late for me. Unless they are a few hundred dollars cheaper.

    You're probably going to wait till after June as that is when most of the sales are for, though deals for the end of the year are starting to come up. Qantas is running a Canada sale at the moment…

    I had a quick look on sky scanner for you the cheapest for that time at the moment is $1800.

    I think Air New Zealand has some flights that arrive at 6:30AM as they code share with united…

    We bought our December flights a couple of months ago….Qantas A380 for about $1300 return from Adelaide to LAX…cheaper if from Melbourne.
    We were pretty happy with that price for a December flight.

    When we were looking at December flights late last year (around October 2014) they were upwards of $2K so i probably wouldn't risk waiting much longer.
