Buying a Watch in Australia - Help!

Hi all,

I'm looking to spend around $400 on a watch and really like this one.

I have no idea on where to buy it/if I am getting an okay price for it as there is only one authorised seller for Junkers in Australia (Watchpartners). $599 from Watchpartners.

I have found this listing for ~$450 on eBay, but am anxious in purchasing from there.

So I guess my main questions are:
Is it a good watch for the price?
Which seller should I buy it from?
Will I run into any warranty concerns?
Any alternatives you can suggest that are easier to find in AU?

Thanks guys!!

(Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place btw!!)

  • I personally like Larsson and Jennings, they're swiss made. I have the Svart.

    Shipping is super fast

  • Need more info. What's with the arbitrary $400? Seems as if you're buying it for yourself.
I use a Pebble myself, got it for around $80 from here (DSE), but if you're after an analog watch…
EOFY sales are coming up. I HAD a really nice watch from Myer (or maybe it was DJ's)..Industrie..really nice. Really wish it didn't get stolen. I think it was around $90 on sale.

    • What's with the arbitrary $400?

It's probably what he can afford/willing to spend on a watch.

        Yea, but why?

Why spend $400 on a watch?? I have spent orders of magnitude more on a watch than that! I could say the same thing about why people need to have the latest mobile phone, why do people need to buy new clothes in a different fashion when their old clothes are still functional. I like watches and have been fortunate enough to afford a few that I like. My neighbour has an enormous boat that he goes fishing in, I think it is hideous and cant think of anything I'd rather avoid than fishing but I don't judge him for it, just personal choice.

@2ndeffort: Can't you see I'm trying to save this poor sucker from forking out too much for something so easily lost or stolen that provides little function in today's society?

@tomkun01: So what do you have to say to me, I've spent more than $7 - 8K each on several watches. I've never had one lost or stolen and they are all insured just in case. I know I could buy a cheap watch at the markets for $15 and that an Omega or TAG is an indulgence that I am fortunate to be able to afford, but I like them and its my money so why not. I did get the best deals humanly possible on the watches I do have so as an ozB my conscience is clear.

Call me old fashioned but I like to be on time for appointments and looking at my wrist is still the most convenient way for me to know the time. (p.s. I currently use have an old model phone that I haven't updated for years because I cant understand why people need a bigger/sharper/better coloured screen.)

@2ndeffort: Let's make this about OP, not about you.

I believe the primary interest of an OZBer should always be to save money and help others save. We save so that we can buy more things.

And setting a price before even considering function is just ridiculous - better to have a look at designs and features, see what features he wants/needs, and THEN look at price.

@tomkun01: I think I answered most of the questions you refer to in my original post. I spoke about the movement type, spoke about what kind of watch he could get for the $$ and even suggested a link for a potential supplier and a web forum where he could go for additional advice. I only mentioned myself because you continued with thinly veiled attempts at humour to conceal your obvious dislike of watches and I suspect your belief that they are a waste of money. In terms of setting a price I dont think it is ridiculous. Watches range in price from $5 to probably $5 million or more. Is it not sensible to set a budget, particularly if you are asking for advice? He has about $400 to spend, What if he said he wanted a cool looking chronograph watch from a good reliable brand and I suggested a Rolex Daytona in white gold (probably $20K ish to buy). He didn't ask 'should I spend $400 on a watch', he was very specific to the point of posting up a picture of what he wanted.

I agree with you that the primary interest of an OZBer should be to save money and help others save. If this guy wants a watch like the one in the OP and has the $$ to buy one shouldn't the goal then be to help him find the best deal on that type of watch? Making comments about how you don't like watches and you think they are a waste of money is hardly meeting those goals. I don't know the OP, I'm not trying to change his preference in how he tells the time, I am just trying to help him find the best deal to get what he wants.

@2ndeffort: yes, your explanation of features was quite helpful. however, i asked OP why $400, and you responded. are you OP? there was no need to reply to my comment. thanks 2ndeffort

        • @tomkun01: Tom, bringing the idea of cos/function into a debate about watches doesn't add anything to the discussion. Honestly, I don't believe the interests of an OzBargainer is to save money, but really to get the best deal. If someone likes a certain look, find the best deal and buy it, this is what 2ndeffort has done. Theres a certain utility to a watch, i'll grant you that - but with saying that should I expect you to apply that same reasoning to everything? You can boil water for tea with a pan on a stove, Big W sells Smart Value toasters for $7.50 a piece, Emerson business shoes are only $15 a pair this week.

Is it wrong for someone to set a budget, find the product they want and then attempt to get it for the best price?

        • @Mikeologos: The problem is, OP doesn't even know what he wants. OP, for some reason, wants a $400 watch - without even researching what $400 gets you.

SMART WATCHES IS THE NEW THING

    http://www.watchmann.com/proddetail.php?prod=60865

USD$389 so probably more expensive that eBay but Watchmann seems to be a reputable dealer, been around for a while and gets a decent wrap on the watch forums www.watchuseek.com

In terms of 'is it a decent watch', style wise it is a bauhaus type design, there are other companies that make this style of watch and Quartz watches are the most common and cheapest. It has a Ronda Quartz movement inside so the same battery driven insides as many other watches, Ronda is a swiss design but certainly not as important or expensive as a swiss automatic movement and not sure there is a big premium for a swiss quartz movement. I dont know much about Junkers, they claim a german heritage but many of the fashion watch brands are made in chinese factories and they then claim some kind of german/swiss heritage by using the name of an old watch company, sometimes they even buy the rights to the old watch company's name so they can stamp it on the watches they churn out.

As a bit of a watch nut I dont normally take much interest in Quartz watches, for $400-$500 I would instead buy a Seiko automatic but that is just me. If you are just after a quartz chronograph, I am not sure there is any greater cache' associated with Junkers than there is with citizen or seiko or any other watch company. If you are interested in asking about the different similar watches around, join the watchuseek forums and post in the 'affordables' forum that you are after something that looks like 'insert Junkers watch photo' and see what comes back. That forum is full of watch nuts and some will know of loads of other designs.

Have a look at some of these from a local Melbourne watchmaker, reasonably priced and some have automatic movements. A boutique/niche affordable watch brand with Seiko movements inside! http://www.melbournewatch.com.au/timepieces-1/

    • excellent advice.

  • Watchpartners claim that they offer a "worldwide price beat guarantee".

You could try showing them the ebay listing, and also the price from the Junkers store, to try & get them to reduce their price.

    https://shop.junkers.de/en/junkers-uhr-6086-5-junkers-bauhau…

Another option is try & ask Junkers if they'll be willing to ship to Australia. They ship to New Zealand, so there's no logical reason for them to not ship to Australia.

If they do say yes, then be sure to confirm that the 19% German VAT is being removed from the final price, when checking out the order.

    • I have also bought watches from these guys and all went well!

      • yep, original boxes, postage was only a few days if I remember right (well super quick whatever it was not weeks)
And half the price of stores here. this was a Casio Baby G my wife wanted and I didnt think it was worth $200 but $100 was fine for a plastic watch.

  • Your Amazon link http://www.amazon.com/JUNKERS-Watches-Junkers-Bauhaus-6086-5… looks like they ship to Australia. Sold by Long Island Watch and you can buy direct from their webiste as well (google it)
