Looking for a wireless router please?

Hi All

I'm looking for a wireless router for our home please?

this would be the first time I've had one so not exactly sure what I'm looking for we only have 1 other 'puter' so I really only need 1 port, and we have broadband other than that not sure what we need

Has anyone got any ideas of what I should be looking for and where to purchase it please

Thanks Nat

  • Few questions to think about:

Have you got a wireless card for the computer/laptop? How is your computer connected to the internet i.e. do you have an extrenal modem with a ethernet port? Do you wish to transfer big movie files or is it mainly for browsing the internet? How far away is your computer going to be from the router?

    Good article http://www.geeks.com/techtips/2006/home-wireless-network-tip…

  • Wow I didn't realise there was so much to think about Yep the laptop has wireless but the desktop is connected via an extrenal modem with a blue cable

Only browsing the net my son can do his home work and I can be surfing the net..

I can put the router right beside the desktop on the laptop is mainly in the bedroom that's 2 rooms away..

I will go and check out the artical now many thanks Nat :)

  • Another thing to think about is do i want my printer to be wireless as well maybe share a hard drive or some storage.

You can get a wireless router with a usb slot , it opens up so many options fr sharing and making devices wireless (not 3g router)

  • you need a normal wireless router.

look at the back of the box, there will be 5 slots, 1 WAN port, and 4 LAN ports. Wirless N is the lastest and greatest, however its useless unless you have a wireless card that can send out n signal. Otherwise b/g are the usual types.
I'd probably go with netgear, but everyone has their own opinion. Just stalk here and look to see if one is on special

  • When buying a router also look to see if it has a built-in modem. Either way would work fine, however you'll need to keep your existing modem if not.

Remember you can also head into officeworks to get their 5% pricebeat.

  • I'm guess price has something to do with it is this one any good?

A built in modem would be handy but not essential

    Thanks again guys :)

    • yeah works fine

    • ive got the wired version of this. has worked fine and hasn't got warm

  • Thanks guy's will go and order it now
Have a great day Nat :)

  • If you want to save a few bucks and don't mind second hand, I'm looking to sell my wireless router - Linksys WRT54G Wireless G Broadband router (boxed) $40

Works great, just don't need it anymore cos I have a new modem with an integrated wireless router.
