Alignment Issue on New Car

hi,

i have issue with my car (honda civic). it was purchased may 2013 and has done 37K on it. today i went for a 40K log book service at Kmart auto service. they told me the car needs to have the front tyres replace because the alignment is off. I did the 10K service at authorize dealer and for financial reason i skipped the service in between. As I bought the car from new, i would assume all in good condition including no issue with wheel alignment. Should I complain to Honda about the alignment which will cost me 2 tyres and wheel alignment to fix?? The car only been used for city driving (kids school and work, etc..) so no crazy driving and surely never hit anything hard on the front wheel..

what do you people think? should i bring it to honda and try to claim my new car warranty ? or just fix it my self?

thank you for the help.

The misalignment could have happened hitting the curb, Honda isn't going to do anything for you there. Cough up the new tyres.

From my driving experience, wheels alignments just occur when they want to occur, u don't even need to hit anything seriously.

Most of the time your wheel will not just fall out of alignment, You've might of hit a pothole which you thought nothing of or simply as Martijn said you've hit the curb. You will need to fork out the wheels and alignment yourself!

  • just out of curiosity doesn't skipping services void your warranty?

so you went 27000km without changing the oil? I'd be more worried about the engine than two new tyres.

It seems totally nuts skipping a service on a brand new car. Not only are you affecting the resale value, but you're risking the 'health' of your car.

As for your question, if You believe the alignment has been out for a significant time, if you'd been and had that service, it may well have been picked up then, and saved your tyres.

Alignment not usually covered by warranty, and so are tyres.

I do not think you even have a warranty in the first place. Skipped a whole service?

37k is a good mileage for the front tyres on FWD. I guess they would be very close to the end of life anyway. Just replace and do the alignment.

  • Avoid KMart especially if you need a wheel alignment. They are hopeless and they will stuff it up…talking from experience…
Also if the front tyres are not under legal depth you can put them at the back and use the back ones (that should be much better) at the front. But do the alignment too.

  • i went for a 40K log book service at Kmart auto service. they told me the car needs to have the front tyres replace because the alignment is off.

Why are you doing a 40K service on a car still in warranty at Kmart?? and why the hell would you skip an entire service?

what do you people think? should i bring it to honda and try to claim my new car warranty ?

Your warranty has been voided by skipping an entire service…

I am also a bit confused here,

Also replacing tyres and doing wheel alignment sounds about right at 40K just replace them at a decent tyre place (not Kmart)

    • Why not service it at kmart?
Why does it matter where you service it if it's under warranty?

      • It's always best to get a car serviced at the dealer till it's out of warranty(just my opinion). That way genuine parts are being used and if something was to go wrong they can't say "well it wasn't serviced at a Honda dealer so you can't prove the (other service place) did this or that".

It is completely different if it is a car completely out of warranty but especially if you plan on selling it and upgrading then having a full in this case Honda dealership service record would increase the value of the car probably by a couple of thousand dollars…

        • Nonsense. You can have your car serviced elsewhere and it has no impact on your warranty.

Frankly I only do the first and major services at dealers with the rest at the local shop.

So long as it was serviced they can't deny you warranty doesn't matter who did it. Also having it serviced at a stealership doesn't mean it's done properly, or at all.

Your looking at south of $200 for two new decent tyres (if you know where to look) and a front alignment for a Civic. It wouldn't be worth the hassle. 37000 is actually damn good for a FWD!

  • thanks everyone for the comment. Finding out the price of log book service is not much if still under 100K, at least worth it finding out if things go wrong earlier. i will get the tyre replaced and wheel aligned. my last wheel alignment is about $50 and new set of front tyres are about $200-$300..about correct?
