Gumtree vs eBay

I was wanting to buy a voucher for the iconic - I missed the ING signup but noticed there are quite a few $250 vouchers for sale. It seems like they are available for sale on gumtree, ozbargain and eBay. I was thinking that I should stick with eBay to make sure I don't get ripped off - but the vouchers are cheaper on gumtree. Does anyone know if I pay with PayPal on gumtree whether it is as safe as paying with paypal on eBay?
Thanks

  • Why not from ozb?

    • but the vouchers are cheaper on gumtree

  • eBay has the reputation system so I'd say it's safer.
Paypal offers protection for both though of course.

      Since when?

There is no paypal buyer protection for purchases made via gumtree - see S12.1.i.i in Schedule 1 of https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/ua/useragreement-full.

Stick to cash on pickup for gumtree purchases.

  • Ok thanks - seems like paying the extra on eBay is worth it then. I can find it for $200 on eBay, $170 on gumtree. It seems ozbargain purchases are no different to gumtree in that sense.

I can't get the $10 signup voucher to work, but if I buy tonight I can get the extra qantas points through the shopping mall, maybe that will make up for it!

https://onlinemall.qantaspoints.com/ref/pgpromo extended to 2nd april for double points

The voucher is digital goods so therefore do not qualify for paypal protection.

On OzB though, you can check out the seller's previous posts/ how long they've been on the site; get a feel for whether they are 'trustworthy'/genuine, by what they've said/done on the site. Someone who's posted often/been a long-time member/ is generally well-like etc. is hardly likely to rip-off a fellow OzBer… Quite the opposite.

      • Ok, I will take a look, thanks

  • why don't you just use this code "INGDIRECT20"

it's 20% off, so assuming you spend $250, thats $200 no risk.

you can only use one voucher either way

  • Oh I didn't realize there was no protection for digital goods. I am wanting to buy some sass and bide jeans and they always seem to be excuded from any of the discounts. I was hoping to buy on eBay with my $10 voucher, then use the $10 signup and add FF points to get a bargain but it's not working! Thanjs everyone for the tips, I will just get back to drinking through my mountain of cheap coke that arrived today!
