  • Get them to test it in front of you I bought a used front loader which leaked water from the detergent draw luckily the seller was a good guy who had another one non working so he switched the draws over and all has been good for about a year so far now.

DON'T. With so many moving parts it could be working today and break down tomorrow. And it's not an appliance you can repair yourself

+1 for not buying 2nd hand. Washing machine gets used a lot usually and has lots of moving parts. Unless you can get one still under warranty or has extended warranty on it.

The current appliances that I have are bought new. The only 2 appliances that has even broken down was the washing machine and dishwasher. Both has lots of moving parts and gets used a lot. Both broke down during their warranty periods luckily.

This is the main item I wouldn't buy 2nd hand - anyone who's had to clean up after a flooded washing machine will know what I mean :)

  • If you are looking for stuff, there is a place on Marion Rd called Discount Laundry Equipment. They have washing machines, dryers, fridges, etc and provide a warranty. Pretty good prices with free delivery. Worth a look but take note of the comments above as well on new vs used.

Find somebody on gumtree/classifieds moving overseas or interstate and selling all their household items. This makes it likely the machine is in ok condition and they aren't just getting rid of it because it is on its last legs.

    • end of year/semester -go to uni's/tafes and check out the notice boards. usually packed with overseas students moving home and wanting to clear out their stuff.

  • I have purchased a 2nd hand washing machine from a stranger (their elderly father had recently died; were trying to get rid of his things). It was relatively new and I never had a problem with it. With every 2nd hand appliance, there's the possibility you are buying a lemon. Make sure to use disinfectant in your wash the first time you use it.
