Best Parts for New PC to Play GTA V and Witcher 3 High Settings?

I am just wondering which parts to get, I already have a desktop which is just gathering dust as the motherboard makes noises (GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R with a Core i7)and replacing it with another LGA1366 motherboard is impossible as there are none around anymore as far as I can find.
So I was thinking just replacing the motherboard with also a new processor and a new graphics card, but which one to get? There are so many… say I have a $1000 budget would that be enough?

  • $1000 should get you more than most of the way there. Have a look www.logicalincrements.com

  • If you can salvage your RAM (DDR3?), HDD/SSD, PSU and case - you should be able to get parts that can run the Witcher 3 on ultra. I would go something like:

    Total: $819

    • i5-4460 = $250
      AsRock z97 = $129

Why a Z97 mobo when you've chosen a CPU that can't be overclocked? You could change to CPU to a 4690K for ~$330 for more power and the ability to overclock. That still leaves plenty of money for a good CPU cooler.

OP - it does depend on what you have that you're willing to re-use as Brouw3r said. If you don't have an SSD already it's an absolute must.

Logical Increments and ChooseMyPC are good places to start and have a look at what you can get for your budget.

I only had a quick look through MSY's intel 1150 mobo page and that was the cheapest ATX mobo, all the H81/B85 etc that are cheaper were all mITX. OP could go for the "K" option to overclock, or drop back to a mITX if his case needs it.

  • Pretty much everything can be reused except mobo, cpu, gpu… I assume Ill have to buy another copy of Windows as the one in the PC is OEM?

I believe OEM windows are bound to the motherboard, in which case you will need a new copy of windows. I got W7 HP N from /r/microsoftsoftwareswap for USD$10 if you want to go that route.

Make sure that your current PSU model can support the energy requirements of your new gear. People always skimp on this but if it blows up then it can kill your PC.

There's calculators on the web that can give you an estimate or you can manually find the Wattage of all your gear. Also, if it's old then its efficiency (% of its quoted W output that you actually get) would have reduced significantly.
