I'm looking to upgrade from a s2 to s5 and wondering what Kogan are like to deal with and buy from?
What is the difference from the 4g one to the octa core and dual sim?
Is there any point in having a dual sim?
As much as I would like the s6 it's just too much so this be a good upgrade from a s2.
I'm currently living in Australia but might be moving to uk im taking all of the above will still work ok over there?
What are Kogan like to deal with and buy from?
Do they supply these with Aus plugs?
And I'm wondering if these phones will be even cheaper when s6 comes out?

    • I bought my S3 from Kogan. Was all good. Took about 1 week to come. Had the Aussie plugs and is still going strong 3 years later. Kogan are hit or miss though. Haven't had to claim warranty so can't comment on what they are like to deal with. As always YMMV.

    • They come with Aus plugs (not official Samsung, but they'll work).

Dual SIM is useless unless you want to have two phone numbers at once. E.g. some people have a private number and a business number, but want to use one phone. For when you go overseas, you'll just pop out your Aussie SIM and put your foreign one in, no dual sim needed.

As with all overseas stock, they don't need to follow Aussie warranty laws. Kogan says they'll offer you a 12 month Aussie wide warranty. They say "In the unlikely event that you require a warranty repair, we will collect your item, repair or replace it, then return it you at no charge." which is better than the vast majority of other Hong Kong sellers. Once it hits 12 months and 1 day though, they won't even talk to you.

The blue, single sim, 4G is the one to go for IMO. Of course you can do the gold one too, if you prefer.

Don't expect a sudden drop when S6 comes out. Phones tend to drop in price fairly constantly. The best time to buy a phone IMO is right when the new model is about to come out - that's what I've done with my past smart phones. You get an excellent phone at a sharp price. That, to me, is the advantage of android over iPhone.

      • I agree, I don't see the S5 dropping too much from this price as well after the S6 is out. Currently hunting a cheap iPhone 5 and up, if any.

        • why didnt u just get the 5c for 399 from jb few months ago, its basically same as the iphone 5 but with a slightly bigger battery, and its plastic.

        • @striker5950: This one's for the gf. Just thought the price was pretty irresistable.

My 4s is still running strong, so no bargain, no upgrade, heh.

      • Just curious - Why do phones from Kogan always come with some 3rd party adapter? What do they do to the official chargers?

        • +2

I think they come with the official adapter, just not the Australian one as they are grey imports.

I'm torn, this or the M8 for a few dollars more?

    • If you dont need water resistant or fingerprint reader or removeable battery then go for m8 by a long shoT very good build quality fast and smooth not held back by touchwiz of samsung and the boomsound speakers are amasing.

      • +2

I root my phone anyway, so I don't use TW. Makes it tough. Bigger battery, slightly faster CPU vs better build and speakers.

        • Don't you lose the FM radio OTA?

        • Comes down to how you use your pho e and if you would hav3 any use for samsungs features or if you are after a pretty basic but very well made and sounding device. I can say with 100% certainty that boomsound is hard to give up once you get used to it. Lol sounds so damn good.

        • Also better camera.

    • For me, it's the s5, plain and simple, for Samsung's multi window software, and much better camera (by a huuuge margin BTW). I'll also be able to take underwater shots, and take an extra battery for replacement on long trips overseas.

But I'll miss out on the metal build of the m8.

  • +2

Yes do prefer a removable battery, like the sound of fingerprint reader something new and water resistant might be usefull.
My one and samsung I have owned was s2 and have no complaints so far,as far as iPhone goes not really been interested in that but do own a ipad lol.
Being able to use micro Sd and buy a battery I prefer on the Samsung.

Can't understand also why black or white would cost more same phone?

Anyone recommend a good case for it or can they be found cheaper than Kogan even with 20% off

  • +3

These models of the S5 won't work with the 700mhz band 28 4G in Australia… I believe the G900i is the model you should buy if this is important to anyone.

    • Yeah, I've just got this for the gf, who will be happy with just the normal 3G connectivity. The 4G model here apparently supports 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100/ 2600 Mhz. Check them out under Tech Specs.

  • +1

Supply and demand I would have thought black and white be more common than the gold and there dual sim phones all colours same prices so should be same for non dual ones.

As for case do prefer one tha covers front and back of phones.

  • +1

700mhz ok right if I'm still in oz for a few years more but what if I move overseas to uk,I'm confused as to what best suits my needs

  • Do any of these have Wolfson audio ?

  • +1

@bwatt99 Going through the motions with a warranty claim with them at the moment. Very slow process. 3 weeks and I finally sent the phone away for them to take a look at. Doubt they will repair it. Most likely give me store credit to purchase something else.

  • Samsung makes it hard to find out exactly what's in these lol.

Which of these has ant+ support?

  • OH NO, so hard to choose now when price is so close, which one you think is better, S5 or G3?

    • G3 the S5 is just a plastic toy that looks and feels cheap…neg away S5 owners.

      • +1

Nah I have had an S5 for almost a year and agree the S5 feels and looks cheap. The damn silver painted bezel chips so easily and now my phone looks like crap. It's been an alright phone but a let down compared to my S3.

        • I ended up going for the g3. Last 3 phones have been Samsung, so time for a change of scenery.

  • Is it better to order two phones same time or two different orders?
I take same discount applies whatever method is used.

  • How does this work for uk use as in 4g

  • so the 4G model they are selling wont work for 4G in Australia?

    • Will work, just lacking the 700mhz that T&O are rolling out at the moment. But as long as 1800 is supported you'll be fine in most areas.

  • No not kogan dodgy warranty bad service we bought 2 s4s off kogan the one the mrs had was or still is a cracker my one crap came from eastern Europe crap different phone completely to the mrs phone not as bright camera not as good she got updates I didn't got rid of phone after numerous emails and phone calls kogan don't give a crap only trying to help people getting ripped off

    • Yeah - mixed experience here too. Bought a Nokia Lumia 2 years back which was a piece of cr@p.
They did refund under warranty, after a lengthy return process.
Bought an iPhone from them too, which has been a better experience, but getting some $0-50 wall charger kind of makes it look cheap and nasty.

One other thing about Kogan - I always like to try and buy a piece of tech when going overseas (on one of TA's deals) to claim back the GST.
Can't do it with these guys.

  • is the model same as the one previously in ebay group buy i.e. the g900I model?

  • i also read that grey import s5 does not work with navigon in australia - can anyone confirm this?

  • -1

yea… no one want to buy it.. they have to sell it cheap… well. not that cheap…

  • My first time getting from them as well. Gf got her S2 from them about 3 years back. No issues with it till recently, hence the purchase. Fingers crossed.

  • +1

is the dual sim worth the upgrade?

  • Thanks OP got one.

  • So does gps not work here in oz from Kogan as mentioned about?surely not as why would anyone get this from them and what about the 4g part of it?

    • Its just the navigon deal that Samsung have that may or may not work. You can still buy navigon from the app store, or any other GPS navigation app

  • Confused? Don't you just go on google maps and use that?
Navigon never really heard of it before so just wondering if the Kogan phone is worth getting over say au stock,I was also looking at a vid on you tube you get loads of free aps with the samsung does this count for Kogan one and will this work in uk.

    • Navigon is a pretty popular map/navigation app.

      • Ok did not know just always used maps on my phone

        • Useful if you want the bells and whistles for navigation.

I also just stick to the plain-vanilla Google Maps myself.

  • Is this Deal still current?

    • +1

Yes it is, as long as stock is available or after the code ends.

  • How long does Kogan take to start to ship, anyone know?

  • Gold or blue is the question I like both

  • If two phones are ordered are you hit with gst when they arrive

  • Anyone?

  • Has anyone ordered in past more than one phone and been charged import duty etc for them?im wondering if the value these at there full price or the price with 20% off?
As if there full price then if hit with import fees etc then deal is not as good.
Is it better to order one at a time than two same time and will they not see two was ordered and ship them both same time?
I did read somewhere that could order in another name and address yes could use wife's name but address would need to be same.
Or can one be sent to au post parcel locker but saying that they might not deliver to a parcel locker it being a courier?
Need to get two phones not sure what models yet but with discount is under $1000 but if they value at ebay price then be over not sure what to do.

    • If you paid <$1000 you shouldn't be charged GST. The invoice will have the price you paid, which will be under.

(Even if it was over $1000, you'd be pretty unlucky for them to notice it and charge you the tax, but it does happen).

You could always just order in two orders if you're worried.

  • Just got confirmation from Cash Rewards, cashback $8.68, total paid: $425.42. Win!

PS: 2% apparently was calculated base on paid price.

    • PS: 2% apparently was calculated base on paid price.

      It always is

      • New to that. :)

Has anyone's S5 actually shipped yet?

  • Mine hasnt shipped yet, still waiting.

  • Negative, seems that they upped the price though. Won't bother updating as it ends today.

  • Regretting not buying the S5 now at this price. My S2 justy died :(

  • Got an email with tracking details this morning, after 7 working days.

    • Still no tracking number here. Ugh, this is getting a bit ridiculous.

    • Boo, nothing for me yet.

  • Got mine today. :) came with a Kogan adapter for AU plugs.

    • Is it the GM-900i model?

      • +1

        Yes it is indeed.

        • +1

I received mine today, and it is the SM-G900f international version. Next best version after the 900i, just missing the 700Mhz LTE band for Optus. Overall, very happy with the phone. Thanks OP!

  • Good on you mate, gf loves hers as well!

  • I still have not got any shipping details and ordered first day.
Has anyone got the gold version 4g lte single sim yet?

    • +1

I didn't receive a tracking number either. I sent them a message on ebay asking if the phone was back ordered, and they replied with the tracking number.

      • Just received shipping details via email. Still in HK.

  • Anyone who bought one of these able to tell me the build number of their phone please! It states g900-i on box but I'm unable to reinstall the correct firmware. Mine won't turn on after a failed attempt to root the device
