Vivid Wireless 4G Gateway $89 Del (Save $50) on 12-Month $79 Unlimited 4G Mobile Internet

50

As far as mobile broadband goes, I don’t think you can find anything in Australia that offers unlimited mobile 4G plans for $79 a month.

I live in Perth, far from the exchange so ADSL is not possible in my area. I have been using Optus Mobile broadband the last year. Last month while looking at other options I stumbled across Vivid Wireless. I also believe this company is owned by Optus. So far it has been a breath of fresh air and no hassles with reception or staying connected (even though the coverage map showed my address as 'not having reception'). The gateways are designed for use with Vivid. I’m guessing the 4G sim or chip is locked inside the device.

Also note these are mobile 4G modems, this also enables you to take them away with you for work or holidays within Australia. All you need is 4G coverage and a power point.

The gateway has 2 internal antenna's, 2 x LAN ports and Vivid also offer cheap home phone plans so it also has phone sockets.

They offer other plans and a ‘ViViFi Wi-Fi hotspot’ for free ($10 postage) if you do not require unlimited internet, a gateway or wish to go prepaid.

All plans: http://www.vividwireless.com.au/plans/wireless-broadband-pla…
Coverage map: http://www.vividwireless.com.au/how-to-buy/locations

If you’re interested and you too live in an area where you live too far away from the exchange or ADSL is not offered. I highly recommend this company and this plan in regards to value.

Also if you sign up before the end of this month the modem is $50 cheaper.

They also offer a 14 days money back guarantee: http://www.vividwireless.com.au/policies/moneyback-guarantee…

PLEASE NOTE:

If you can already get normal ADSL or NBN where you are then you do not need 4G mobile broadband from Vivid or anyone else.

We can both get a free month by using my referral code when you activate your device. Code is 30379. Enter this when you have received your device and are activating your account, then we’ll both get a 1 month free data credit.

How good is the speed? I am 3-4km away from Exchange, speed is only OK.

BTW first time I heard unlimited 4G plan in Australia.

    • What is the best way for me to check the speed? As mentioned the coverage map showed me as having no reception but I am able to download movies, watch YouTube and Skype with family without any problems.

        • +1

Keeping in mind, as mentioned I live in a 20 meter hollow below everyone else where mobiles and digital TV are very bad… My results were Download: 5.4 Mbps 672 kB/s and Upload: 207 Kbps 26 kB/s

        • +1

@IG88: not too bad I guess… slightly better than adsl at those distances (4-5KM)

    • Vivid has had their unlimited 4G plans for ages now. When I first moved in to my house 3 years ago I was on this plan. Same price back then too.

      • $50 discount until the end of this month

      • "Same price back then too."

So, NOT a bargain after March.

OP, add that to Title or add an Expires date, maybe.

  • Are you guys sure 4G unlimited wont work nationwide. I dont see a reason why not of its true 4G (Unless vivid own a specific 4G spectrum)

    • +2

They use WiMAX, not LTE. Both are called 4G. LTE is more common, though, and the one you have in phones.

      • So, does that mean you can't use it other than at the place you designate (eg, Home or Office)?

Must require fixed, directional antennas, eh?

Too bad… We need a mobile service, not Point-to-Point.

  • I got "Your address is not in coverage at the moment"

When signup for Interest I got

"Thanks for your interest in vividwireless. Unfortunately, we are no longer expanding our network coverage and as a result, are no longer accepting any interest registration.

We wish you luck in finding your next broadband provider.

    The vividwireless team"

    WTF, no longer expanding?

    • +1

Well the OP seems to be in an area that isn't covered by them but apparently still getting reception…

OP, are you able to advise if you able to describe your situation abit more? Are you in an area that is close to having reception or are you way out of the serviceable area and still getting service?

      • Hi ProjectZero, I live in a very deep hollow about 20 meters below everyone else. TV and mobiles do not work very well. My signal on the modem is in between "Good and Strong" on the signal bar.

    • They also offer a 14 days coverage money back guarantee: http://www.vividwireless.com.au/policies/moneyback-guarantee…

    • See above

    • A company that ain't Growing…
can be expected to be Going… Away…

      How soon?

  • Nice to know that there's cheap 4G broadband out there. Too bad it's mainly inner Melbourne suburbs only.

    • I personally live in Perth.

      • Sorry - I meant for Victorian customers

      • Can you please post some Speedtest.net results?

        • +1

he posted them above after your comment was posted…

    • It's not even remotely comparable speed wise to your typical 4G connection.

You will not see proper 4G speeds out of this device. Just do a search on whirlpool for typical speeds.

      • As mentioned I would not rely on my speed results and I live in a 20 meter hollow. Please refer to the average person who does not for accurate speeds. Personally, in my area, a stable and usable connection is more important than super speed. Maybe the speed is great in many area's, I'm not sure.

    • Too bad I am in Sydney.

      • According to the map there is reception in Sydney.

        • Mainly close to CBD and I am not :(

  • Not available at my current address nor is it available at my new address i'll be moving to in a week, and not available at my previous address all in Sydney.

  • That says it all. Basically they desiderata when it is enough.

    Restricting your heavy use

If in our opinion your use is so heavy at any time that it will adversely affect the quality of the service received by other customers, we may de-prioritise your access to the network. You will be notified if you breach the AUP.

Peer to peer file sharing falls into this category. You should be aware that we de-prioritise peer to peer traffic so that it does not adversely affect interactive traffic, such as phone and general browsing services. We recommend that if you are using the network for lawful peer-to-peer activity you schedule downloading to outside peak usage hours, for example midnight to 5am WST. For more information on traffic prioritization and Quality of Service (QOS) please refer to our FAQs on peer-to-peer traffic and prioritisation.

It is mobile broadband. I'm assuming there is much less bandwidth with a mobile signal. To me, this sounds fair and does not affect me as I am not constantly downloading huge movies and games. I do however like to watch Youtube, Skype with family and friends without stressing about a quota.

      • +1

Maybe avoid HD YouTube videos, just in case…

    • +1

Oh, well… No Net Neutrality for You, VividWireless users.

Now, it's REALLY Not worth TWICE what my friends pay in USA. :-(

  • +1

If anyone is thinking about buying one of these, I would suggest buying external antennas and fitting them to the device instead of the internal antennas. My download speed went from about 3mb to 9mb when I put them on the roof.
Takes a while to get delivered but worth the wait and not too expensive.
    Details here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1519576

    • I do not believe these have the option for an external antenna. I have only read about opening the units and applying external antennas via a hack.

      • +1

You make the option with a Dremel! :)

        • Lol, just might give it a try. Bought a Dremel just 2 weeks ago!

        • Its definitely worth the effort. Find the nearest tower and point the antennas towards there and watch the speed increase :)

        • @irishjoe: Yagi Antenna?

        • +1

Yup, 2 Yagis and the adapters to connect them to the vivid unit.

  • Unless you are in the same predicament as the original OP. I would highly advise you to save your money and look else where. Ex-Vividwireless Gateway customer speaking here.
They offer the world and deliver crap!
Head thy warning. Stay far away unless you absolutely have no choice!

    • If you can get normal ADSL or NBN where you are then you do not need 4G mobile broadband from Vivid or anyone else.

  • I'm currently stuck in a situation where NBN, Cable and ADSL is not an option….(bloody stupid "no available cable pairs") and I looked at this, no coverage in my area. Not to mention the Whirlpool notes on this service.

Still a step in the right direction with unlimited "4G" internet. If only we could get something similar with one of the other providers at a reasonable price.

    • Keep in mind they do offer prepaid.

      • +2

Prepaid is still not going to work if I can't get reception at my place…I am well and truely out of their coverage.

I'm currently using a Vodafone prepaid sim in a Huawei Y550 to take advantage of their unlimited data weekends. LTE 4G connection seems pretty good

        • How come you can't get adsl. Is that because no available ports? I

        • @man0k: that appears to be the problem. Getting it checked again at the moment. But to date I have had the "no available vacant pair" report a few times and my last (mid)adventure with Telstra resulted in a pair gain system voice connection despite ordering n ADSL bundle. my latest conversation with Telstra seems to indicate that the last person was imcompetant and ordered the voice line and ADSL separately hence I ended up with bill for the standalone voice service. They have waived the bill and this person has requested an ADSL availability check but I'm not holding my breathe.

    • Same here no NBN, Cable, ADSL2+ 3-4km away.

Really stuck couldn't get faster Internet for better video streaming like Netflix.

    • Mayber there's a Community-run MESH-network passing overhead, or nearby, that you could join & get some Internet from…?

      (Cf Air-Stream.com.au or similar…)

  • No Darwin? I've been living with 3g mobile data for the last 2 years. :(

  • I know since my fone provider offered this, I lost all interest. Only need it weekends though +$31 mo
Besdies, LTE Voda coverage exceed WiMac.

  • got this message

    Sorry…

Thanks for your interest in vividwireless. Unfortunately, we are no longer expanding our network coverage and as a result, are no longer accepting any interest registration.

Vivid never made it in Sydney since day 1 when they first spoke if expanding I was secretly hoping there would at least be one non telco based provider of wireless data. Then Optus with the grace of ACCC swallowed Vivid. Now there's no more competition the big 3 always have the same old same old pricing for wireless data. It's as if they all agreed to do it at a particular price, so similar it's not even funny.

  • +1

Thx. Just used your referral code as I had to create a new account. You should see a credit.

Have used them for a while now. For those of us who do not have any other options (ADSL / NBN), this is about as good as you can get depending on location.
My speed varies from 50kbs (rare) to mostly around 2Mb/s - 5Mb/s sometimes 8 Mb/s

For those NBN lucky folk this is caveman like… but when you have nothing you take what you can get…

  • +1

Just got wind of vivid. No home gateways in stock.
Signed up with the wireless wifi dongle.
Will use your referral code when I receive and activate (strange it's no on sign up) ;@)
1st month free for me or following month?

    • They will credit you for next month if you have already paid :)

      • Change of direction.
No coverage in my area, modem keeps flashing red can't connect to network.
Device being returned, contract being cancelled.
