Chinese equivalent of Gumtree Sydney -- does it exist?

Hi Ozbargainers,

I have a few friends looking for work. One is from Hong Kong, another from Japan. They're both international students and are new to Australia.

I usually refer people to Gumtree as a source of looking for part time jobs, buy second hand furniture etc, but obviously the jobs posted there will require people to speak fluent english. Not exactly the best place for an international student to look for.

So far I'm aware there is Jap community website called cheers.com.au but I need your help in locating a Chinese-based community website so that they can search for jobs and look for accomodation.

Are they allowed to work? Up to 20hrs per week? Just be aware, I've heard Immigration run sting ops to get people, then cancel their student visa.

Yes, 20 hours max. Unlimited hours if the course is not in session.

      • It's actually maximum 40 hours per fortnight. So they can do 30+10 if they wish.

And yes, unlimited if course is not in session.

    • Are you sure about the sting ops? I know dozens of kids working more than 12 hours (i think they manage to get cash in hand) but none are worried about 'sting ops'.

  • I don't believe one exists Scrimshaw, but there are plenty of Chinese forums in which people frequently post For Lease and very occasionally job advertisements.

Plenty of internationals (Taiwanese etc. etc. etc.) working here http://flavoritetomatoes.com.au/contact-us/
and most of them enjoy the job and the local environment (many come back a second and third time) and the ones I know don't want to leave. They are
treated very well by the employers and paid according to Australian regulations - I am told it is one on the highest paid 'farm'jobs in Australia. Also there appears to be plenty of local accommodation (I could help them with that). Warragul is on a train line direct to Melbourne, so easy to enjoy the city life on days off :)

That's very helpful for these Sydney students :|

  • This is a good one. http://www.sydneytoday.com/

Third dropdown menu is Employment. First option is job ads, second option is where you post what kind of job you're looking for.

Your chinese friend should be able to navigate this site easily.

    • Thanks, looks good.

  • OurSteps forums might be one of the biggest Chinese-language online community in Australia and there seems to be work related forum there. OzBargain is getting quite a bit of referral from that website.

    • Cheers scotty.

  • I believe Yeeyi is pretty big for Chinese as well. I know some people who used to look for people to work from there.

  • Yeeyi.com

Most of my students use that
