What Type of Flights to Buy?

So I'm going to Europe in June/July this year, but I have a slight problem regarding the booking of my flights. I am going to be flying into Amsterdam, and flying out of Barcelona. I know what date I need to fly BCN -> SYD (1 August), but I am not sure of what date I want to fly SYD -> AMS. The reason for this is that I do not know when my uni exams in Sydney will finish, and I would like to leave for Europe as soon as they finish.

So, my question is: Would it be generally cheaper buying a one-way BCN -> SYD right now, and waiting until I know about my uni exams to book the 2nd one way (I will find out about the exams in mid-May)? Or would it be better to wait until mid-May and book the open-jaw ticket then?

Cheers!

  • Unless you get an amazing sale on the one ways, open jaw in May should be cheaper.

Buy some REALLY good travel insurance the day you book the flight. If your exams are rescheduled (weather, fire alarms etc) or you are sick and have to sit a supplementary, most universities won't count a prebooked holiday as an excuse for not attending unless it is to attend something major like a wedding.

    • Thanks toniyellow! What do you think about this third option: buy the open-jaw tickets now, for the day after the exam period finishes?

  • If you're just after the cheapest fare bucket possible, then you're going to have to assume the risk of (1) having to travel on the set date, and/or (2) having the price fluctuate if you aren't certain of the dates to book. That's why the fares are cheap.

I tend to go either semi-flex or fully flexible in economy, but if I was really strapped for cash, I would only book the dates I would 100% be certain on travelling on (it's not fun having to pay for the change fee + fare difference, especially if that cheapo-bucket fare is no longer availiable).
