TPG FTTB Weak Signal

Hello All, I recently had TPG FTTB installed, brilliant speeds downloads of 3mbs, very happy compared to the prev 300kbs.

1 Problem, My router has to be downstairs in the only socket and near foxtel box, my room does not reach the wifi signal, TPG gave us a huawei modem, we have our old Net gear DG2200 going to waste, is there any way I can use that as a wireless extender? If not, what can I buy to fix this as i really would like to get the wifi working while in the upstairs section of my unit (3 of us live upstairs).

Thanks in advance.

Do you get the chance to run an Ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs? Otherwise look at power line Ethernet, and plug in the DG2200 upstairs and configured as a wireless access point alone, and have it connect to the Huawei device.

    • Not possible to do via ethernet, cable, do not own the unit and would require a lot of work.

Powerline may be the way to go. Thanks for the response.

Use a powerline adapter to connect the first modem to the second modem. A powerline adapter, as the name implies, makes power points and power lines act as ethernet cables.

Then set up the second modem as a 'slave router' to extend your network.

    • Powerline adapters can be quite slow if the house is set up on different circuits

  • BTW, 3MB/s (24mbps) seems too slow for FTTB, you should at least get 7MB/s. I personally get 11MB/s.

    • on a speed test im getting 49mb downs but the fastest ive had (torrenting) is 3.7. if honest it doesnt bother me because im not that impatient and compared to what we had its amazing.

  • Would one of these be of any use to me!
