  • Not really. Duty free just means no tax. Tax on most items in Singapore (and here) is gst (alcohol has a bunch more tax). Can't remember what Singapore gst is, but less than 10 percent if I recall.

You would be best served by looking around for the best price in town. Personally I don't find that Singapore's price is much cheaper than here, however I have never looked at jewellery.

On another note, the price of the ring should mean nothing to a relationship. If her criteria for saying yes is only if you produce an expensive ring, then have a good think about it. That said, a 20c bubble machine plastic ring probably won't make the grade, I tried that one while drunk :)

  • I recently imported a diamond from Zoara, which was a lot cheaper than the local diamond merchants. Got a family friend who is a jeweller to make the ring, according to him, a separate appraiser I had to engage for insurance, and the two diamond testers I bought from banggood Zoara sent me the real thing. Be careful paying them because even if they quote you AUD they will charge USD to your card so if you don't use BW zero platinum or Citibank plus you'll get hit extra for forex conversion.

They also do engagement rings .25 carat diamond 14 carat gold for about $680. It's below $1000 so you won't get hit for GST either.

You can always upgrade the diamond later when your pockets are deeper, or alternatively consider a diamond substitute like moissanite - this is the closest diamond substitute and costs a fraction of what a diamond costs, not because it is a fraction as good, but because there isn't the same monopoly on supply or the same huge demand that exists for diamonds. Don't go for cubic zirconia though, CZ really doesn't have the same hardness or sparkle as diamonds or moissanite and CZ stones are almost worthless (I bought a CZ ring from banggood for $3 to test my diamond testers)

  • I think you should go to a jewelery by yourself to buy it even if you think it's a little more expansive. This kind of moment is really precious :)

  • Engagement ring is one of the most significant jewelry that you going to wear for the rest of your life. I think you shouldn't compromise with the style, quality and design, If budget is the issue then diamond coronet engagement ring are much more affordable.

    • How are any of those rings cheaper than the $800 budget OP has?

  • I bought from one of the chains in Singapore. That was a few years ago, and I found the range in Singapore to be better than local. I did spend a lot more time looking over there than here though. Have had friends who purchased from Blue Nile if you want to check out a different option.
