Android user here - I had Google maps refuse to give my location using GPS only on my Xperia the other day - it was insisting on having " use local wi-fi and mobile networks" turned on before it would locate me. Here Maps was quicker, and offered more routes to where I was going, quick responses to speed limit changes, rapid re-calculation when I declined the suggested turns and all this while off-line.
When I was setting it up for someone who wanted her privacy [ or at least the illusion lol], I was able to register with Here maps [ a necessary stage on Android before downloading off-line maps] with a totally non-existent e-mail so if foil hats are your thing, this is a good matching accessory.
I know which one I'll be using…
+1 Terry… map systems for phones that need internet access are a pain.
Another offline one that is very good (but not free) is Sygic.
I use Metroview. Australian made software. The UI is terribly ugly and the CPU requirement is high, but it's good for GPs navigation and speed camera notifications.
Thanks a lot!!!!!:) Great timing too A+
