Delivery services listed on Gumtree

I am considering using a delivery service listed on gumtree. There are quite a few actually… I would like to buy a fridge of Gumtree and have it picked up and delivered. But I am a bit concerned with paying for the fridge, but never receiving it. At the same time, I would prefer not to offend anyone by asking for their licence, or meeting them at the pick up location (well for my safety also).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am also thinking of using the delivery service for the purchase of a second hand washing machine and other furniture as well… but unfortunately it will have to happen on different days as I won't be able to find everything at the same time…

I wouldn't be concerned about offending them if you are employing them.

You could also use a site like airtasker to advertise what you want. I believe people bid for the job on that site, and you can leave them reviews, so you can read past jobs they've done and read the reviews, to make sure they've turned up in the past. I think they are less likely to be dodgy through a something like that, it would be clear that they do odd jobs to make spare cash and rely on good reviews, they're not out to steal stuff.

I've never used it but have heard good things. I've tried to become an airtaskee to earn a bit of spare cash but it seems people always choose to employee the people already with reviews, so its hard to break into it.

    • How about becoming Uber taxi driver? very lucrative these days.

  • I did this few times but bit different way. I asked seller to arrange for transport so i got stuff delivered at home and handed over money to person who delivered it…

    • That is risky in case the delivery guy runs away with your money. How to prove to seller you paid? Having said that, I've engaged a van pick up service with Gumtree and it was all good. Honest people who did the job well and were just trying to earn spare cash. In this case, they picked up item from destination A and brought to me and I paid them for the service. The goods payment to seller should be made via Paypal (now allowed on Gumtree) so if anything funny happens, you can get back your money.

      • Is this really the case though? Would a seller assume that I am trying to pull a scam on them if I asked to pay via Paypal?

  • I unforunately had a really bad experience. I had booked someone to meet me at another gumtree seller's house as I was buying a dining table plus chairs that I couldn't fit into my little hatchback. He had promised me that he would be there the night before. I waited over three hours, tried calling and texting and he never answered his phone or texted to let me know he wasn't coming. I was stuck at the seller's house with a dismantled table and 6 chairs for hours. Luckily my partner's friend eventually came to the rescue with a 4wd to fit the table and we got the chairs in the hatchback but it was a scarring experience.

This was a Sydney located person with a moving van.
