Computer Parts Getting Expensive

My brother in law asked me to buy another 4TB hard drive for his NAS. I checked MSY website, the Seagate 4TB is $239 whereas 6 months ago it was $179.

Also I wanted to buy another 2TB Seagate external, they used to be around $100 on a good day, now they are $115-$130 at Dick Smiths & Office Works.

Anyone else notice big increases in computer hardware? I know it is because the Australian Dollar is falling.

Must be bad for someone buying an i5 or i7 CPU, that would almost be an extra $100 now.

Yep, everything is going up in price now. Funny because prices didn't really drop when we were on parity, but now that the dollar is sinking, prices are quick to rise!

    • yep forget it

unless you need that part for a build or on special. save you money

  • In July 2013 I priced up a build which included 2TB WD red HDDs. They were $119 each at MSY and $118 each at umart. I have not seem them for this price or less since, and it's been a long time since then. 16gb RAM was $130 and the i5 4570 was $225 (but this has since been replaced so not as easy to compare).

I wish I'd done that build… would have had a solid computer upgrade for quite a bit cheaper than I could do it now.

  • I did an upgrade first part of 2012, in fact almost a new computer, I bought 16GB DDR3 1333 (2xGB simms $49 each) for less than $100. Cheapest 8GB simm at MSY now is $85. Also the I5 2500 I bought then was $220, they are a little more expensive now and the newer models of the I5 arn't that much faster (10%-20% faster) compared to previous generations such as mine.

    • memory is a different story

we had companies dumping memory and the low dollar

now that ddr4 is coming out ddr3 is going up

you have to strike when there are specials and hold, ie. i had no use for 16Gb but when it came up for under $50 each i bought 2

      • now that ddr4 is coming out ddr3 is going up

What do you mean by that?

Production of DDR3 will decrease so the price will eventually increase when DDR4 ramps up. Look at the price of DDR and DDR2.

        • @Olokun: I thought it would go down due to EOL for clearance

        • @cwongtech: Production will slow down but EOL won't be for another ~10 years or so.
