Phone running 4.2.2 in a bootloop. Will an OTA update (possibly via SD Card?) help

My phone came up with a "process system isn't responding" error message. It was running, but slower.
I did a bit of research, with advice to back up via settings. I came back to do so, but my phone wouldn't respond. Now it just boots to the unlock screen, then resets after I enter the unlock code.

Since USB debugging isn't enabled, I cant access it via USB.

I reboot holding Vol+ which brings me to an Android Recovery Menu. I inserted an SDCard and chose the backup option, but I have no idea what it actually backed up (hopefully photos etc).

In windows terms, if this happened I would simply insert the OS disk and re install Windows back over the top. Can I do this with Android? I have access to the OTA updates. Hoping I could simply chose the 4.2.2 update (same OS) so that it wouldn't wipe anything (as I think if I chose a newer OS ie 4.4, i will definitely need to wipe everything?)

Anyone had similar issues? I've been trying to search through Android Forums all day, but cant get a clear answer… hoping a fellow ozbargainer, who have owned a 1000 phones that they didn't need to buy ;) can give me a response in simple terms?

Cheers all

Might help if you provided what phone model you're using.

OTA will not work now. OTA means over-the-air. Obviously, since your phone cannot boot up and cannot download the firmware on it's own, it requires a manual firmware re-flash.

Official ROMS and images can be downloaded over the internet. I'd say check on XDA for possible links and instructions.

  • It's a Pipo T9. I get a bit confused with all the terminology. I can download the stock firmware (that is currently on it). Will this simply overwrite the current/ corrupt system, leaving the rest of the data (photos etc) untouched? Cheers

    • Yes. If you reflash the ROM (same version again) your data and apps are left untouched.

  • Cheers Scrimshaw. Now just need to learn how to do it!!

It wouldn't be as easy as putting the firmware on an SD Card, then going into Android Recovery Menu - and then choose "Apply update from SD Card"?

With the mass of PC based flash tools etc …I'm guessing not (The T9 is an Octacore Mediatek based device- Don't know if that makes any difference?

    • Yep you boot into recovery, then flash the zip file. Easy as pie :)

      Good luck!

  • Not so sure a reflash of the ROM without a factory reset will fix it, but it wont hurt to try. Factory reset is generally the way to go in a situation like this (though obviously will wipe everything).

    • You generally need to wipe data and clear the dalvik cache prior to reflashing the ROM, but this is generally only required if the ROM you're installing is very different (this is because the new ROM adds new stuff that invalidates the older files). If you're just flashing the same ROM again, nothing has changed, but it's a good idea to clear the Dalvik cache after flashing.

But it won't hurt to try first and see if it works.

However it is generally best to start with a clean slate by wiping everything, and go from there, if you are experiencing performance issues.

  • Cheers guys..I have been researching like a zombie since 2pm..Ozbargain to the rescue again!

  • Just to confirm…

I simply copy the stock firmware on to an SD Card and leave it as a .zip file, or does it need to be extracted first?

I then turn on phone holding down Vol+ button until I see the little Android laying down open image. From that drop down menu chose "update via SDCard"

…hopefully it will work (and wont deleted my data).

also, anyone got any ideas why it happens? I hadn't installed any new apps or anything lately. I did notice that Google Apps was running horribly slow when trying to identify my app list, so I'm guessing that is the culprit somehow?

    Once again…cheers legends

    • Just gotta leave as .zip and it'll do the rest for you.

  • Thanks again, i'll cross my fingers and give it a crack.

  • I notice your previous post 8months ago since you got the pipo T9. How are you liking the chinese phablet? I might buy one as well but worried it won't last long
