Was gonna get them brand new but not anymore since the price hike. Turns out their refurbs are much cheaper by $600-$800. Still a quite few on there at the time of writing.

Grab them while they're hot!

  • Just a heads up to everyone, these laptops all use integrated graphics so if you were looking for something to use for gaming, this is not it.

But they'd be fine as a work computer.

    • +3

Yes and no, depends on the game. Intel IGP can run many older games fine.

      • +1

I agree but still, one would be much better off with a dedicated graphics card for even light games such as league and csgo (although that's more cpu bound)

    • -1

One does not buy an ultraportable for gaming.

      • -1

and one does not buy laptop for gaming

        • +8

What you talking about? My Dell can run Flappy Bird and all my other Big Fish Games at full 60 fps at 1080p, you telling me that's not a gaming PC?

        • -2

@scrimshaw: casual gaming pc =/= hardcore gaming pc!

        • +1

          @scrimshaw:

My $10000 gaming pc can play Solitaire. U mad?

  • Unit has minor cosmetic wear.

does anyone have feedback on how "minor" is that wear?

    • +1

Previous refurb units I got from Dell were spotless. Luck of the draw I suppose but generally it would be like a small scratch or scuff mark - probably the way a new one would look after a month or two anyway.

    • +1

from my experience with my Alienware 14 and U2913 DFO purchase, the condition is pretty good. Just like brand new.

    • +1

yep, just bought a latitude refurb from them last week- was described as minor wear…. looks absolutely brand new. can't fault it.

  • Oh damn. Don't tempt me!

  • QHD model sold out :(

    • how did you find out?

      • +1

Through chat, Asked about purchasing the QHD model, they replied after checking their inventory that its sold.

        • thanks :)

  • +4

$1400? At that price, why wouldn't you go for a brand new Clevo?

    • +1

Completely agree - I got an awesome laptop about 16 months ago from LBO that pissed all over the XPS equivalents for almost half the price.

      • +5

These are ultrabooks (not full-fledged laptops) - there's not a lot of variety in that department. the 2015 XPS 13 is one of the best available right now.

        • Hm, you're right. The Clevo "ultra portable" range is actually standard size, e.g. http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/553-horize-w650sj-ult…

        • @tomkun01: not gonna lie. They do look nice for the price. Has got me to rethink that once I'm done with uni (thesis etc) I may get one over an ultrabook.

        • @beaver2233: Only downside is the comparatively short battery and the distraction of games

        • @tomkun01: haha! Is the battery life still short without playing any games?

        • +1

@beaver2233: I get about 3 hours on mine with internet use or watching movies. Gaming only 1 hr, as it runs the nVidia card hard. If you're after sweet battery life, get one without a discrete graphics card and with a low voltage processor. You can always get a second battery too, as it rests outside the laptop, not inside like an ultrabook

  • Speaking to an agent now, appears that the 2015 models are sold out. They are just checking to get confirmation.

  • Fellas,

why should I have such a resolution (3200*sth) in 13" laptop?

I am serious, I know perfectly that every manufacturer is moving in that direction, but still, I don't see the advantage in such a small screen.

I haven't seen the Dell screen so I cannot express any specific opinion, mine is just a newbie question.

    • they say 1920 x 1080 to me

      • +1

Probably QHD model is sold out then…

    • can you scale it back to 1920x1080?

      • Probably you can, but in general the image looks blurry…

      • +3

You can, but it's not recommended. You can scale the DPI as well, and Windows 8 does an OK job..

I was actually working on one of these today and they are very nice, except the resolution. Just too much!!

      • If you want to scale it down, you'd go for half (1600x900) to prevent resampling. It's still higher res than the typical 1366x768 and should be perfectly sharp, but it's not quite as good as 1920x1080 if you're going to do that.

    • Why would you want a 2048x1536 on a 7.9" ipad mini? Or a 2560x1600 res on a 8.4" Galaxy Tab Pro? It looks sharper.

      • Well, I don't look at my tablet 8 hours per day.

It's not a matter of being sharper, it's that I have to rescale it because, with that resolution, icons and text are just too small.

And, when you rescale it and you use a double screen (like an extended desktop), image looks blurry (as far as I understood, it's a windows limit).

Not only, higher resolution means higher power consumption and more stress for the graphic card (that turns in higher consumption) .

Again, it is just my two cents, and I do understand that I am one of the few that have concerns about that. :)

        • +1

Windows 8 let's you use different DPI for each monitor.

        • +1

Windows 8 and 10 no longer require rescaling. They will work like tablets and phones. Higher resolution does not mean smaller text. It's the same size, but the text will be sharper. Only old Windows worked like that. When you get Windows 10, your problems should go away.

Though if you play games, you will need beefier hardware. But it will look better at least.

        • @lostn: Thanks lostn. Good to know that. So I don't need to think about resolution now when buying my next laptop. Though, I think a touchscreen is more desirebale over a non-touchs one right? For Win 10 I mean.

Tried to contact chat and ask about the availability. Provided all the 5th gen i5 bundle numbers and was responded with "we can only check 1 bundle at a time". Great sales reps.

    • +1

They are probably expected to respond to a certain amount of people per hour. It's not their fault, just doing their job in the constraints they are given.

  • Can anyone tell me what's better? A Surface Pro 3 or one of these? They look about the same price (yes, the keyboard cover will cost a bit more). Serious question…

  • How to distinguish this new XPS with 'borderless screen' from the last year's generation? is the 5th gen intel processors the only tell? Not much info there on Dell's DFO website…

    • +2

States on screen column 'infinity display'

  • There is no more 1.2k ones

  • I totally agree with refurbs statement. Pretty new and yet very cheaper.

  • +1

Mine just came in 2 days after ordering. There is zero sign of previous use apart from the lack of plastic packaging. Will be testing further later but looks very promising. Almost immediate delivery for $700 less than new retail.

    • have you owned any recent macbooks to make a comparison? i'm seriously undecided which way to go after the recent apple price hike

      • What comparison are you looking for?

I still have a 2006 MBP but no recent one. I knew I was getting a laptop this year and had woolies gift cards in preparation for a sale, most likely a retina MBP but after reading online reviews since, I was strongly swayed by XPS 13. When I saw it was on refurb sale, I didn't hesitate. If you're looking for an ultrabook, you just won't find anything comparable at $1200. It's a no brainer for me.

Guess the giftcards are going to masters, groceries and opal for the next year!

        • macbook air 13'' comes down to under 1200 refurbished, BUT only has 4gb ram (which should be enough for my use) and would not be as up to date as the new XPS (4th gen processors, lower resolution screen, bigger footprint, etc)

  • On paper, The 5th gen mba has a higher range clock with same turbo so presumably slightly more power efficient. Also has hd6000 whereas dell has hd5500.

The trade off is the screen and size which more than makes up imo.
