New Router

I know this isn't a great deal but hoping someone can find something cheaper. I've seen them around ~180 Euro on amazon but not shipping to australia which would be ~240aud + postage excluding VAT.

DSL-AC68U 185,94 € (~$270) Shipped from France Excluding VAT

I've seen the Archer D7 for ~150aud on ebay + the free movie ticket. Kicking myself i didnt buy it last year with the free usb adapter.

Any better deals?

Seems a lot of money for a router. What's so good about these compared to cheap Chinese routers, e.g. TP-Links? Can't you find something suitable on cleanup day? At least get something that can be flashed with open source firmware - that will be a lot more flexible.

    • The Archer D7 and D9 are from TP-Link, also, if i remember correctly these can't be flashed with DD-WRT.

The ASUS one can be flashed with DD-WRT.

Hey OP, I would just wait for the next deal. The D7 and D9 seems to be on promotion quite frequently or you could wait for the netgear nighthawk R7000.

    • Cheers. Debating waiting for a better deal versus the dollar dropping further and the deals being worse…

I have DSL-AC68U and cannot fault it ($300 delivered)earlier this year.
Main PC is on the PCE-AC68 wifi adapter, cannot fault it at all, great combination.

So funny you are asking this here. This is the router I'm looking to replace. The 5ghz band has played up since I got it. And for some reason I can't see the 2,4 with my main comp.

      • Thanks for your feed back will give it a miss

Just saw this being posted, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/185812… lol so this deal got unpublished… but it's from wireless1

    AC68U for $289 with free shipping…

D7 for $151 with free shipping

D9 for $240 with free shipping

Store in Parra westfield as well.

    • Meh, I got my D9 for $199 delivered with Wireless1 Parra. Better deals to be had AFTER the click frenzy sales, I'm sure. Don't get tricked by the Click Frenzy marketing.

Are you after a modem/router or just a router?

If the latter, the RT-AC68U is cheaper than the DSL-AC68U at around $220+.

    • Debating it, yeah ive seen the router for 215.

Router supports ddwrt but i was hoping to cut down on cable mess by just going back to all in one.

      • I know there's less mess with all-in-one, but you do get better DD/OpenWRT support without a DSL modem built-in, plus when FTTP/FTTN (or even HFC) comes, you'll need to upgrade the modem part anyway.

        FWIW my recommendation is a TD-8817 ($22) + Archer C5 ($99) or C7 ($140).

when FTTP/FTTN (or even HFC) comes, you'll need to upgrade the modem part anyway.

At least some of those systems provide their own ethernet NTU, so as long the router can be made to use one of the 'internal' ethernet ports as an 'external' port you'll be right otherwise you'll need to bin it.

Routers without modems do have better prospects of open firmware though.

  • I'm reluctant to spend more than $50 on a consumer router. What do these ones do to justify the prices quoted?
Aren't there are cheap routers direct from China that will do the same thing?
