Hair coloring for dudes

I'm thinking of getting my hair colored, I'm a natural blonde and fairly light at that.

I've been thinking of getting it colored a slightly darker shade of blonde.
Probably wanting to get it done with my next haircut, but I'm pretty sure my barber doesn't do sissy stuff like this.

How much should I be paying for a quick color?
Whats the process?
Things to look out for?
How long does it usually last? Stuff like that.

I'm in the Melbourne CBD

Thanks.

Prices and quality will vary depending on suburb and experience. Just call around and try one or two out, and make sure you're happy with it the service. Experience is the best way to do this.

    DIY? o.O

    Edit: on second thoughts…maybe not

Asian hairdressers? I think in Korea it's fairly common for guys to get their hair dyed, so I am sure those places will do them at least (though get quotes beforehand).

If you are blond and if you are dying your hair to a darker colour, as far as I know you'd not need to bleach your hair (I almost was forced to, because my hair is black. No, it was done against my will). Also, I suggest you to charge your phone battery or bring some sort of entertainment. Unless they have something that finishes quickly, it would take fair bit of time (I was almost dying of boredom while it was going on). My memory tells me it was around 30~40 minutes for me, though, as I said, my hair is black so that may have done something to do with the duration.

It's going to cost quite a bit. Perhaps find a home hairdresser, should be cheaper for colouring

Permanent dyes (which is mostly what you'll get at a salon) will usually last longer than your next haircut. Basically, your main issue will be regrowth, not the dye fading or anything. Costs will depend on your length. Obviously, longer hair will cost more. But it is usually better to grow out your hair first, and then get it cut after dying it. The dye damages your hair and makes it more coarse and brittle, so consider getting a new style to begin with, not just a new colour.

If you go to a salon, you'll need to make an appointment beforehand. They'll wash your hair first and then apply the dye. You'll have some time to kill, so pick up that New Idea from 2007 and read about whatever Pauline Hanson's been up to. Then they'll wash it again and maybe give you a hair treatment to help counteract the damage. Then they'll cut your hair. The dying process itself shouldn't take that long, but give yourself a couple hours for the whole thing.

I'd caution against going to a Korean-trained hairdresser simply because they're Korean. Asian hair is thicker and more porous compared to Caucasian hair, so it must be treated differently. Great if you're Asian, but not really applicable if you're not. But it all depends on experience, of course. An Asian hairdresser who has been working in Australia for 15 years is still likely going to have more experiencing in dealing with Caucasian hair than a $29 Scoopon deal with some 22-year-old recent TAFE graduate.
Korean hairdressers tend to have great service, though. You might get some snacks to nibble on, or some coffee, or a fruit smoothie while you wait, or maybe an iPad with WiFi to browse YouTube.

For Korean places in Melbourne that are good with blond hair, take a look at Suggar on Swanston Street: https://www.facebook.com/suggarbeautycity

And Shine in Chinatown: http://www.shineon.com.au/port (Ask for Jenny to cut your hair. Tell her Ben sent you).

Suggar is a bit cheaper than Shine, but you'll be looking at prices between $100-150 (dye+cut) either way. Ask for a quote beforehand. Shine gives 50% discounts on the week of your birthday, though, so if your birthday is coming up~

you said you go to a barber, so I assume you keep your hair fairly short.

DIY would be the cheapest option. Cost $10 to get a box of hair colour on sale from Coles/Woolies. It will take around 30-45 mins to dye your hair. There is manual in the box and it is easy to follow.

Or you can go and pick any hairdresser/barbers along Elizabeth Street in Melb CBD. There are 5-8 shops between the start of Elizabeth Street (Flinders station) and Queen Victoria Market.

They are not the fancy type of establishment. Normal haircut is around $10-$15 but they are more than capable of handling complex hair colour as well. No point spending $100-150 in Korean places especially if your hair is short. It will cost you around $50 here. Most of the time they'll give you free haircut if you colour your hair

If you're going blonde to darker blonde then DIY semi-permanent is going to do the least damage, the roots will have to be re-done quite often and a semi-permanent won't look so bad as it will fade gently rather than give a stark demarcation between 2 colours

Do you have a sister? Get her to do it for you :P Seriously I remember cutting my older brother's hair. No I didn't force him, he begged me to!

Go to the local tafe or be model for a hairdresser.
Even big names like Toni and guy do this.
Or you can try something similar to this.

    Good luck

You're so lucky to have blonde hair. My hair is black and I would have to bleach it to dye it crazy colours.

I would suggest you get a pack of henna dye from a indian or a middle eastern store. Henna is the least damaging for your hair and it's quite natural looking too.

I think you should try the men colour range.
This doesn't cover 100%, it only makes it a couple of shades darker maybe.
But the good part is, it washes out. so you won't have a regrowth. If you don't like it, don't need to do it again. It lasts for a couple of weeks and it's way cheaper than normal colour.
We do it quite often at Janos Kiss Hair in Cremorne, Sydney.
Have a look at our website and book in if you'd like to give it a try:

You will probably need a hairdresser salon rather than a barber. Not sure on prices as I'm female with long (ie expensive) hair, but lots of hairdressers have price lists on their websites.

They will paint it on with a brush like a paintbrush, and leave you for about 15-20 minutes, then wash it out. If it's permanent it will fade some but not completely, then grow out. After 6 weeks you will have regrowth.

If you're game to do it yourself (it's not too hard), try doing it yourself. You could look for the Napro Live colours if they still exist. Cheap, small boxes, wash out after 8 washes or something? A tip if you do DIY - often the colour turns out darker than what's on the box.
