Will Duty Free Alcohol Be Charged as Extra Luggage?

My friend is going overseas soon, flying with Jetstar.
Their carry-on luggage allowance is only 7kg. (She did not purchase check-in luggage allowance.)

Here is a question.
If her carry-on luggage is 7kg at the time of check-in, and if she purchases duty free alcohol after security check and the immigration, the luggage will surely weigh 10kg or so.
Will she be charged for the extra luggage?

I do know that Jetstar is getting really strict on the extra luggage and I've seen them stopping passengers and forcing them to weigh their luggage even at the boarding gate.

I suppose she could just take 4kg of carry-on luggage and buy duty free alcohol but it's really not worth it.

Anyone with similar experiences?

Duty free regardless of weight or volume is not counted into the carry-on luggage weight. You can buy what ever you want within reason of the countries alcohol 'limit'… Go crazy :)

    • Thanks for your quick response:)
      I didn't know that.
How about other souvenir items like chocolate, koala toys, t-shirt etc that are sold at the shops just before you board. They are also "duty free", aren't they?

You may bring one main item and one small item as carry on baggage within the weight limits above.

The additional small item you bring on board could be:
    A handbag,
    Pocket book or purse,
    Coat,
    Umbrella,
Approved duty free goods (international flights only)

    • So if you already bringing a handbag or coat then you can't bring your duty free goods. thanks for the clarification.

    • I am confused now. It appears that duty free goods are counted as carry-on luggage.

      • Yes, that appears to be correct. They also explicitly say that:

Economy passengers may bring one main item of carry-on baggage and one other small item, with a total combined weight of up to 7kg.

  • They don't reweight after check in, you buy your alcohol after checkin, so this shouldn't be an issue?

Sidenote, anyone here who has flown with Garuda recently and can confirm if they're strict with the 7kilo limit as well?
